anyone know what these are like in terms of durability and quality?
theres a 9'1" MCT in the star surf shop (poly construction not tufflight or epoxy) thats 1250 and looks smick. Thats 200 less than a custom from the byron shop. But does the glass job match?

As all the boys know I'm a massive McT fan, however I draw the line when it coming to GSI/McT.Popout City and I hate popouts. If your going to folk out 1250 why not go for the real deal which will hold its value way more than a GSI.
I take it this board is new
On the quality I wouldn't rate the glass job not unless they GSI have cleaned their act up.

PLEASE!.....Don't do it.

If you buy a McT from GSI you'll surf it, fall in love with it and it will self destruct before your eyes.

I had a I got a lot cheaper than that new. It presure dinged far too easily.

Spend the extra on a genuine that will last for years and have resale value.

Hi Glasslove, I've got a Fireball 9'6" SLX. I've had it for about 5 months, and surf at least twice a week. I don't surf anything too radical, just normal cruisy, longboard type waves. So far the board has stood up no worries, no damage or pressure dents from surfing at all, and I weigh about 90kg. As we surf all reefies, i have hit the rocks once, and damaged under the nose, and when i rang a local shaper about repairing the ding he told me he doesn't do epoxy, fair enough, so araldite it is for the time being. I love the board and reckon my surfing is improving, but most of all, i'm having a ball. I paid less than a grand for it, brand new, off the rack at a local surf shop. I don't worry too much about resale value, I reckon boards are made to be used and coming from a windsurf background i normally ended up breaking them anyways. At less than a thousand bucks, i reckon i've already had heaps of good waves on her and that's all you really want at the end of the day.

I have a GSI McT because I did not know any better at the time and it was an impulse buy... I'm happy with the shape/ride of the board, but the deck started to 'cave / dent' around the stringer after only 4-5 surfs... although to be fair mine is the SLX construction which many have commented on this forum is too fragile.

I also have a 7S GSI in Poly that was my daily board for 4 years... and I rode that thing hard. I would have to say it did NOT ding any worse than any other board I have had over the past 30 years - most of which have been customs...

From what I have read/know - the glassing on the new GSI 7S boards have been improved around the tail area - not sure this applies to the GST McT's...

Gwendy, Is your old one the blueish one in a local surf shop?

It looks like it has been attacked with a hammer, I've never seen a board with depression that bad.

I do know a guy who, with some degree of apprehension, did buy a GSi fireball and claims he's happy with his choice.

I've never seen him pilot it but I can garuantee that this guy is possibly the biggest pussy I've ever know and may well qualify as the only man in the world who surfs worse than me.

For one minute Asea came to mind but he can surf

I recall Asea sometime ago found out his new McT was GSI and flogged it ASAP.
But that's generally what Asea does

Yep, that's the one.

To be fair that boards 4 years old and they may have lifted their game at GSI.

The after sale service is good.

After the run I've had with popouts its Aussie made for me from now on.

New MR is still awesome!!

There is nothing wrong with the GSI, proberly the equal of many Aussie made boards, it's just that the guys at McTavish Byron are the best you will get. Board makers that have been doing it their whole life and are in no hurry to move on to somewhere else.
I can assure you that you can get a better price and less hassles if you order it through a local stockist. The freight cost to WA are $140 a board to WA which the local dealer will wear a bit of, dings in transit are the dealers problem and you have the convenience of trade ins, cheaper deals on covers, legropes and the like.
Only ones dealers can't do a better price on are the specials from the McT site.
