As you guys know I am from the dark side.
I have been checking out the longest of rooms for a few months - but rarely post. Over the past week or so I have warmed to the green room as you guys appear to be a great bunch of blokes that go off subject at random and don't take life too serious - unlike somewhere else. Then I started to think what would riding an LB be like.
I haven't riden SB since 95 as I have put on a few lb's since. Started Sup 1 year ago and love it. I always said I am too young for a mal (which I know is a bit rich considering I Sup). Well that may change, as I was checking out McTavish's website last night and may have the LB bug. Owning a longboard would get me out there more regularly as I only Sup surf when it's glassy – on a LB I would go out in most conditions.
I love SUPing on flatwater, and the surf, and will continue but just reckon I might have found a new hobby. It's amazing how your outlook can change in such a short time.
And I get to wear an 'old guys rule t-shirt'.

This is not a gee up.

i started surfing at 130kgs on a long board, i learn't on a 9'6 fireball 23 x 3. I used that for about a year and it would work but it definitely wasn't ideal for my weight. I then hired MacT's rental 9'6 redline and found it to float me even better than my fireball and was a lot better for the bigger guy. i am now about 120kgs and use a 10ft 11ft and ordering a 12ft. IMO i would be going a 10ft fireball , Neo, Redline (preferably square tail), a 9'6 could work but u will get the ****s like i did alot of times not being able to paddle on to waves you know that you should be able to easily

a 10ft to get into the swing of things with a longboard, then maybe you could go lower if you want

Cheers for that.
A newby question: Why do they have 2 measurements for the length of board ?
Is this a range of length available ?

Most models come in a range of sizes... some only two eg the Fireball Evo. If you don't mind the wait you could order a custom.

FYI I am about 114kg and 45yo and surf a 9'1" McT FB Evo. At 66lt volume it floats me fine...

Some of the other guys may also share their weight/board length ratio... I know there's a few in the +100kg division

Agree,I'm 45 kgs and must order customs for my weight.

Haha at 103 I always order customs to suit my weight,My UFO 903 x 23 x 3 is not on their scale and neither are most of my other boards.I like to mix things up[}:)]and it works for me.

Trust me when I say my tongue was planted firmly onto the inside of my cheek when typing 'the old guys rule t-shirt'. Do old blokes actually walk around with those shirts and think they're killing it ?

Safe to say nobody is dropping in on your mate. "WHO DARES WINS"

EDIT: As mac said they always look better on the BBQ - just ask lacey (although I recall lacey has sold out to milk crates)

I'm deeply offended young scotty me lad, why i think I'm the most serious chap on the entire seabreeze

Just look at all the good advice I've given out:

I once explained in detail how to fix a broad that had a crack on it ? And what about all my marital advice about how to please your lady friends, and I managed to do it in the same post as the crack on your board repair advice.

And then there was the lessons in etiquette when a Mynhoffer owner wants to tell you how cool their giant panty liners boards are.

How to protect yourself from being ass rapped by a SUPpy dog by using a pipe fin as a decoy.

How to rate a stool.

And the list goes on, why I reckon any day now I'll be up for a sainthood, beatification at the very least

And as an additional way of showing how serious I am, If you can turn up at my local any Saturday arvo, Sunday morning or Sunday arvo, I'll make sure I've got my spare 10'6" on the roof for you to have a paddle on.

Now that is a really sensible board for a big guy who just wants to catch waves and get a good glide on.

I reckon I would go 24.25 wide and about 3.25 thick and it would be just perfect for me.

Welcome aboard Scotty! Funny post mate. Too true.

Obct, more great stuff.

Scotty, which ultra large longboard do you currently prefer to take into the surf? As you know, we're not meant to mention the "s" word in here! For your first Malibu Longboard, you would be hard pressed to go passed a custom McT Fireball with tints, as your starting point.

9'6 x 23 x 3 is "starting price" in racing terms... But if you enjoy glide, and enjoy float / volume, coming off a larger "s" board, you could consider 9'9 to 10'0 x 23"1/2 x 3"1/4. If I was you, I would probably start with something from the "higher performance" section of McT. Yep, The Fireball would be a good starting point.

I class Longy as my local, DeeWhy can be okay but of a weekend there's heaps of Crispys brethren who turn up with all their gear and take over the grassy slopes complete with the mamma's lounge loaded on the back of their utes.

Then the dudes mentally scare the children for life by parading around in sluggos pulled up so tight that they give themselves a nut wedgy.

And it does not help that they haven't been to see the local shearer for a while to get their backs trimmed up. When they start playing soccer they look like a bunch of rock apes fighting over a coconut.

obct, funny! ^

Scotty,
Have a flick around...
Here's some nice Noosa 66 tints that can be applied to a Fireball !
http://www.mctavish.com.au/surfboard/noosa-66#

Splayed Stringers / converging stingers suit the square tails, if you go for the Fireball Square Tail !!
www.mctavish.com.au/surfboard/noserider

Or maybe dipped tints and twin stringers... again, you can apply a variation of this to another board of your choice! The sky is the limit!
