G'day

I looking to start surfing this summer but haven't really got much of a clue as to what kind of board to get etc..
experience wise, only been a couple of times managed to catch a few waves, I found the paddling to catch a wave to be be the hardest part.

was thinking a 2nd hand board would be the best option around the 7ft - 7'4ft size?
any recommendations where to buy a good 2nd hand board around the Sydney area?

Is there any brands I should def avoid?

As for me I am 180cm, 70KG

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated

Cheers!

I would suggest a mctavish for you

So all the others in the line up can see that warning sign on your board to beware

well depends what sort of wave i guess but for me... go big ... at 70kg you would rock on a big board

7ft is too small... thats if you are into longboarding ... start at 9 and go up from there then you will catch waves and make progress

Welcome aboard mate, I'd look at 8 foot x 22 3/4 x 3 of there about's mini mal shape, when starting out the more waves you catch the fast you will improve, ride this type of board for 6 to 12 months pending how often your surfing and drop down if you want to ride a shortboard.
Visit good board stores in your area not fashion surf shops and ask around, remember they are sales staff a huge difference form receiving advice from a good one or someone who just wants to make a sale.

Just starting get yourself something cheap and nasty off gumtree for a few hundred bucks worth similar dins to what's been suggested. You will not lose a lot of money when you come to change it up at the end of the summer and have more Of an idea of the type if surfing you want to do or even if you wish to continue with it. Enjoy!!! No need to spend a lot of money up front - save that for later!!

Good advice ted

IMO Anything above 7'6" bout 21.5 -22 wide and 2 3/4 will be fine to learn on in most case.

Depending on age and where you surf?

Its all about paddling bloody hard, building paddle fitness / paddle speed... Timing in getting to your feet, and getting to your feet smoothly (smooth like a cat!)...

Maybe invest in some 1-on-1 lessons. 7'6/8'0/8'6/9'1... doesn't matter too much at first... But I could suggest;
7'6 - 50 to 75kg
8'0 - 60 to 85kg
8'6 - 70 to 95kg
9'1 - 80 to 105kg
9'6 - 90 to 115kg..., etc...

Here are a few examples of what you could look at for not a lot of money and would be fine to start with. I find with gumtree you can always bargain down a decent amount - like anything for $300 I would start at $220 and normally expect to get it for $250.
