Hi,

My 15 year old daughter is into longboarding and surfing in general, currently have a watercooled 8'6" and my tufflight 9'6" McTavish Classic, both of which she rides well and she is starting to cross step and look for more nose time, waves permitting.

Birthdays comming up and new/2nd hand board is on the cards, it will be used mainly in Perth Metro... beachies and northern reefies.

Looking for something to suit 5'7" tall 55kg rider, something over 9' and not over 22 3/4 wide? Any recomendations that will not break the piggy bank or anyone know of good 2nd handy over here in west?

Will head into soul to check out boards this weekned, is there anywhere else in Perth worth poking the nose into check boards out.

Soul would be my point of reference for you. He normally has a bunch of things lurking in the dark corners.

I have had a couple of boards from TheSurfBoardWarehouse so maybe one of their longboards would suit. The specs are on the website.

There's a longboard shop in north freo that always has a decent range of new and second hand boards called ocean style I think. Take cash with you if going there

so, not much that took her fancy except a

Dead Kook 9'2" diva - expensive, heavy old school rails, lot of tail rocker - not sure how this will go in Perth mush/beachies
Fire Wire JT single fin 9'2" - Lighter weight and progresive rails
South Coast 9'6 - 2nd hand havent seen it in flesh yet.

Still need to get to North Freo Store as they where shut and maybe have a look at some tuff lights.

North Freo shop is on the market and he's getting ready to head to Noosa to live, but worth checking out as you may pick up a bargain as he clears stock.
The Kooks whilst expensive is a good option but Ian Chisolm of South Coast is a great shaper and boards are usually top quality. Everything ylur looking at is on the money Other than the fire wire, steer clear of that in my opinion.

when you go to the Freo shop have cash in hand, be cheeky you may get lucky??? If not Ross will look after you.

I reckon skip the log unless she is a good rider and she wants to only surf traditionally. It won't come of the bottom and hit the lip or do proper cutbacks.

The FW if it is the pro I'd reckon would be ok.
Light, they surf good, easy to turn, can NR it.. Much more of an all rounder then a log.


But Why a 9ftr? Is she going in comps?

I reckon at 55kg she could surf an 8 just as good and heaps easier to handle.
Normal LB dims just chop a foot of it.
Something like 8x22.5x 2 3/4.
18inch ish nose and a pulled in tail..

Already got an 8'4" or 8'6" cant remember exact dimensions, She starting to cross step and look for nose time. Wants to do Comps next year and likes the traditional style.

I/we have a good quiver of shorter boards to cover the turn and burn style.

Plus side is a 9'6" log will be good for "dad".....

In that case grab the firewire, seems to go pretty bloody good for TJ

Firewires are a great performance log if you want to surf it like a shortboard. if your not Jensen and want to cross step etc , in my experience they are crap. I've known two fireiwre longboards of friends that have snapped in pretty mellow conditions, known and loved Nev for years, my busddys the agent for them in WA and I still wouldnot go there unless of course I want to throw one around like a short board.

Firewires generally, there's some pretty epic boards in the range. Rode a mates a month or so ago that was designed by Vance Burrow (Taj's old man) with a bit of volume in it, absolute cracker, that thing was awesome.

Just their Mals I don't rate. If you want a performance mal there's better out there from the likes of Steve Del Rosso and the McT clan. That's only my opinion though based on my experience I'm sure there's stacks of crew who would rate them highly.....somewhere. ;)

Shunter you mentioned a south coast. Have you seen it yet?

The ones I've seen have all looked good.

I was offering my advice on the 3 second hand boards mentioned...if I was gonna recommend boards without the boundary of 2nd hand availability in WA. Considering WA is one of the worst places to locate a decent 2nd hand LB's imo...I'd say grab a Sunova or a good old CW SDR...if your concerned about the ease of difficulty level in cross stepping grab something wider rather than something narrower. If an all rounder is the focus go down around 9 with a width under 22.

Alternatively you could grab a Modern Old School online brand new for about $840 delivered to your door with a bit of a google search. Wide & light.

I'd contact Steve Del Rosso from Clearwater,he makes boards here on the GC and freights them to WA all the time,he may have a second hand board that suits.He may have some in WA already.

Yahoo Surfboards in Dunsborough have the Moderns in stock, they have a McTavish, they have a bunch of HP second hand longboards, they have a variety of Firewires and some other bamboo thing I can't remember. And they do custom longboards if you are that way inclined down the track. Lots of options there.

If these suit then hard to wrong for the $$

at 55kg wouldn't be going to long, wide or heavy, I'm only 65- 70kg and wide, heavy boards are a a pain. 9x 22.5 or so by 2 3/4 would be heaps. Just look for something with a wide nose if she wants nose ride..

I think if she want to nose ride etc and thinking comps she needs to get a nose rider.

nose riders by nature are suppose to have some weight. momentum . probably the only board you every want heavy

A heavier board would be better in WA (windy always) conditions if thw winds up, thats true. But a lighter 9'6 or even 10 would be fine for a 15 year old girl, she could damn near hop skip & jump down to the nose on board that wide & long if the winds not over 8knts offshore

Yeah they changed the name. Guess they didn't want old codgers being reminded they are 21 anymore. Even 44 year olds like feeling good about themselves when they buy a new board.

Thanks for all the input, in the end I splashed out and got her a new 9'2" dead kook Devo. Birthday/xmas present and then some... I looking foward to a ride on it later in January when we head to the south coast for a holiday at a well know longboard wave with all the other 2000 other blow ins.

Now as typical when someone buys a new board its been either flat or onshore.

Haha, Webber did that to one of his boards.

The Fatburner was changed to the afterburner.

Blokes don't like being called fat or having a sticker on there board pointing it out when they are walking down the beach.
