Good morning all, Just recently I picked up an elcheapo 8'0 mini mal / mid length thing to get me into a few little peelers while I'm pushing the kids in.
Despite the board being a bit of a pig with terrible fins after a handful of sessions on the thing I'm hooked on the ease of catching waves and have been having a ball in conditions that would have usually only warranted a swim.
I've been surfing for 40 years and had a heap of different boards but never anything over a 7'0 and haven't paid much attention to the different styles of longboards around.
I'm pretty keen to pass the pop out down to my daughter and get my hands on a good quality board around the 8'0-8'6 mark and was hoping some of you more knowledgeable folks can offer some advice on which brands / shapes I should be looking at. I'm looking for a wave catching machine that'll still turn in the pocket if I can manage it.
I had a bit of a look over the Mactavish site and like the look of the Fireball Evo 2 but that's as far as I've gotten and a bit bamboozled by all the different shapes around. I'm living in Perth but don't mind paying delivery to get the right equipment.
Any advice would be much appreciated, whether it be boards to look at or keep away from.
Thanks
Talk to your local shaper, let him know what you have been surfing and what sort of breaks but also where you are wanting to go with the board...
Local knowledge and refinement goes a long way...
You might also find being an SB guy going to a longer board you might want to go shorter and wider, like a big fish or Simmons as these will allow you to surf more like the SB, more vertical but still give you the paddle/easy wave catching... I recently had a 6ft Simmons, thing just cought anything and really wanted to go HP... but i'm a glider guy, wasn't my thing but my sb mates who had tried it were literally fighting over it when I went to sell her, could be an idea.
Best of luck.
