Lol. The thread monster strikes again, but strangely can't help myself.

No. They are like trainer wheels. On any board. Unless you are throwing airs in which case a tail pad may be useful. Having never really done an air I wouldn't know on that though.

Ive done it.

And on a short board you would have to be hopeless to think you dont need them.

Cant see how you could lay down any kind of move

Unless you like soul arching on a sb

all about how you look boys?

It's surfing not a catwalk fashion parade..

The tail block is great, means you can duckdive a 9ftr...

Good for drop knee turns 2

The rest is a waste but the tail block is useful.

But what would I know.. I'm a gay learning kook.

How many people here even surf waves on a LB that you need to duckdive? Less then 5??? Dick high dribblers mainly isn't it?

I'd have to put on about 40kg's to duck dive my longboards, I do the roll if I can't simply slam through em

& yeah they do look silly...but hey' each to their own. I'd assume your a kook if you had one, but if you started doing good drop knee turns I'd change my mind

I used to run a high ridge under the heel with wax before tail pads were better made. The old ones used to get slippery in mid winter, some still do & you gotta wax them.

Haha.. I can't justify it but...

Dude i weigh 70kg..
I need all the help I can get. Can't DD the 10ftr but a normal 9ftr is usually ok. Usually... Not so much the newer one, a bit more volume.

But yes they are helpful, and slamming over? Where do you put your foot. Mine goes in the tail block. Another advantage...

Funny thing is most pros who aren't psudeo hipster use them.. Just another look cool over function IMO.

Having said that I don't have one on my new board... Too embarrassed

Or too lazy..

& so the truth comes out...deep down you know LOL

I think there are a lot of pro's that surf LB's like a SB mostly with the odd nose ride thrown in for good measure. So the tail pads probably good. Truth be told I know fark all about pro LB'ing to be honest & don't follow SB pro surfing much either. But the local LB star rips SB style & I've never seen him nose ride.

I'm 78kg...I could kinda duck dive my first HP 9'1 very narrow LB. It was heaps narrower than a whalebone & my current main board is heaps wider than my whalebone. You'd have to be at least 125kg to duck dive it I reckon.

By slamming though the wave I mean. Just paddling extra hard at a wave & then doing a push up as the whitewater hits you & hopefully runs under you. Basically works for anything small than the length of your arms. I'll also do it laying completely flat with my cheek to the board if I paddle hard & break through the wave just as its breaking & burst through. Kind of a duck dive in a sense, but not a conventional one. Otherwise I'll try & do the old roll in anything other than something breaking on my head which you can usually avoid most of the time

Oh, I know..

I thought you meant the clubby style lean back and pop over.

Even when I do the one you described the tail block is a good thing to wedge your foot back on.
It's hard to explain but I just got used to it and have just gone with it.. Newest board doesn't have one ATM but I have been thinking about it.

If you kinda roll it onto the rail when you push down you should get deeper. That's kinda the way you DD it.

I can't do it as good anymore, boards have more volume and it is more practice and technique then strength.

Most of the time I just go the roll option if I can't lean back and pop over the foam.

And the turn thing. It's a cheats method
the tail block gives you something to push against. If you know what I mean.

Is that after the man bun section mac?

I'd be way more embarrassed having boardies that i bought to match my board then using a tail pad.

Maybe next fashion cycle?

I would add, And having the ability to back it up.

My HP were only ever let down by the rider. I certainly didn't need a pad for my hacks, roundhouses or mistimed lip smack snaps that I would land every second time (maybe) and with the grace of Stephen Hawking getting his shiz on in a club.

Fun free wafts and airs. Not sure they are needed on anything else as my foot never pushes back that far to hit the block.

Or maybe, if I had a tail pad I would have been surfing like that? Doh! That's what the problem was.

What type of singles are you riding

And drip what am I backing up??

It's a tail pad. I see it as a wax replacement not a claim that I rip..

That brings me 2 what is the fascination with how things look and fashion? I thought surfing was about paddling out and catching waves not how cool you are...

Lol. It's all good. My post was in reference to Mac's post on tail pads on HP shorties. It was meant to be a light hearted addition to why I think they are pretty much unnecessary for the average joe surfer. If you like one for your surfing then great.

On longboards I just think they look ugly.

At a personal level, the truth is I don't like how they feel underfoot and I don't need one. Like all things surfing, it's personal and we all like different things. It was never meant to seem like I was having a go at you SP. If there was one right answer or opinion you would all be surfing the types of boards I do.

My singles are quite retro shapes. Also pretty big. The smallest is 7'. If I need a smaller board then a single isn't the answer. There's a reason twin find and thrusters were invented for small waves.

Wide point forward, simple vee bottoms, lots of thickness and full rails. Low nose rocker. I love the lines and speed. I grew up on single fins and when I returned to them I realised that feel was what I had been looking for for 20 years of customs.

Haha. I wasn't going to cry or anything

I just don't even see it as an issue, if you wanna use one use it.
Doesn't mean anything IMO..

But that's alright I'd think you were an old hipster kook riding singles 2

That's what I got called the other week

But over here short punchy beach breaks the tail pad is a help in a lot of cases on a shorty.

The fashion thing wasn't really to do with your post. I'd guess if your riding singles your probably wearing black wetties and don't give a fark about how you look.. But over the last 5-10 years surfing is just becoming a fashion parade... And a cool competition.
You only need to look at all the cool looking funnies that crowd the break on any summers day..

I initially went back to singles four years ago because of a severe ankle injury that means I can't surf HP boards without a lot of pain. Turned out I really enjoyed them, which was a bonus, but the impetus was just to stay in the water. It's weird as I can still surf my twinnies no worries. Go figure.

And nah. Not a hipster. Born in Gero - anyone who knows that town in the 70s and 80s would know I couldn't possibly be a hipster. Lol

I got called an old kook by a guy in lorne last year after I had a go at him for throwing his board across my path as I took off on a two foot wave. He was screaming to make sure I knew where he was like a little girl and it was all under control until he blocked my line with his board.

I felt better when I saw him squealing at someone else half an hour later.
