I am sure there are other threads like this but I am oblivious to them.

So, I rode a 9'8 mal of some random dude while I was at the recent comp, He had this fin in it that it turned so well but still held in great while on the nose, I would not attribute this to the board at all, I hated the board.

I have seen the before and chatted to a few longboarders and another local also has one. A shape like this www.wetfins.com.au/surfboard-fins/longboard-fins/rainbow-fins-10-a-line-clear/

Is this shape known for turning but still having great hold?

Could you recommend (with links) a fin that will give me great hold and still turn?

I am not too fussed on price, I can get my sponsors to get me one.

Looks like this one will do the job for you Tom - I think I want one as well now

This fin has its roots in George???s windsurfer! He and others have lent strong encouragement to bring this design to the surf world. The basic theory is a ???stiff leg??? and ???active paddle??? (sometimes called the paddle fin). By putting the working part of the fin deeper in the ???clean??? water, the feeling is solid yet highly maneuverable. This fin is one of the only designs we have ever claimed to noseride as well as it performs in the turns. The 9.75??? is a perfect complement to a 9???6??? single fin. These fins surf a bit smaller than their size compared with conventional fin sizing.

Yeah they are nice!

Would you agree with mac? A dolphin fin would do it?

I might try dads 9' fiber dolphin today, see how I go.

Fatboy style fins are the go, if you want to turn and noseride. You can sideslip down a steep face, then go forward to the tip, they hold brilliantly.

Yeah, my rule of thumb is all fins need a wide base, it where the drive comes from.

After that, rolled rails and square tails get a D style noseriding fin. The Jai lee captainfin is what I have in my 10ftr, it has a bit of curve but is still very upright so it pivots and has lots of drag.
For boards with edge in the back 1/3rd, I reckon a dolphin style is to go. They have rails that want to turn or break out of the wave so once again a wide base and others have said a fair bit of area in the tip to hold it in.

Having said that fins are a bit of a lottery and what one person likes another doesn't and what works in one board doesn't work in another.

And finally don't be scared of big fins. Big single fin are great cause the extra depth is all extra hold.

I had this 12" glass flexy fin on a 7'4" hull bottom mini by Billy Tolhurst..it turned really well and held on the tip..but the board was only shortish and not a log..

Cheers for the input guys.

My current fin is something similar to the one Ted posted but doesn't pivot too well as it is very stiff which is what I am after.

The 'D' style sounds like it may be a viable option.

Will have a look further.

I still love the idea of the rudder kind, from the ones I have ridden they pivot so well!

Are there other fins like this that allow pivot and not drive? Don't really want drive, just pivoting. Also, should have mentioned I only weigh 65kg so hold is too bad, I mean on my ECS log I reckon I could get a stretch 5 with only the side bites in.

I had a nice pivot style fin in a 10 footer I once had. It was very upright with a lot of surface area. It was a 10 inch Dion fin. Great fin that worked a treat. Plenty of hold. I got a pic of it somewhere on here but am hopeless at loading it up . I'll have a go.

I'm buggered if I can do it Tom but if you go into my profile and look at the pics theres some good shots of the fin plus the fin on the log I had.
The fin I'm talking about is on a dark brown board.
