looking for some advice , im 57 surfed all my life except the last 12 years as i have been in wa and took up kiteboarding, although i kite unstrapped on a 5/9 mulcay board i am struggling getting back into it on a shortboard.

I still have a Geoff Mccoy 6/7 shortboard but fitness and having not surfed for some time is making it not so fun.

I now live back in Margate Beach in brisbane but mainly travel back to the sunshine coast where i was brought up.

Looking for advice on a long board design that will suit the the waves up at sunshine/colum/alex etc .
Happy to pay good $ for right board so not looking for a cheapie

Welcome to the Greenroom. I am surprised that 3 people have not yet hit ya with some info already All three of these blokes make beautiful boards that will not disappoint.

SDR makes some nice boards and he has lots of highly ranked punters on his boards - so they do work Chrispy will put you in touch.

McTavish has been making them since time began - Mac and Simondo will give you a good rundown on what models might suit you

Goodard - RG makes some amazing boards and Pup will give you all the info you need.

I enjoy my firewire longboard. I am mainly a short boarder and its a pretty HP longboard. But if you are after a local shaper I would go SDR. He is making some sweet boards at the moment.

Hi Bearbusa.

I'd go secondhand till you find your feet again and work out what you really are looking for. You might surprise your self how quickly you progress again and you will work out that mid length are the most versatile yet underated boards.

Sunny coast you will not need anything with a lot of rocker as the waves usually don't have as much push as some of the Goldy beachies.

Have fun

Hi Bear

I am some what older than you however a similar path.

I windsurfed for ever then along came kite surfing and I have done this since the beginning and done most of it and now mostly enjoy kite surfing on basic good surfboards strapless.

I have wondered to SUPS and enjoy this as well however have also gone down the LB path and joined a local club which was a good move.

With LB I started about 2 yrs ago changed boards a few times trying to find what works for me, end result I resolved my prone wave catching ability lacks and while I enjoy my Mc T Evo 2 I struggle to catch waves in less than ideal conditions.

A couple of weeks ago friend lent me a 9' 4" Tuflite of some sort, I caught 10 times as many waves. Following this with some research I bought a Robert August model 'What I Ride' Tuflite and now I love LB as catching waves is as easy as my SUPS.

In time I am sure I will get more out of my Mc T Evo 2.

Hope this zhelps

Hi Dave

I am 76 kg and very more or less than average LB rider.

I have researched paddling techniques and this with the RA WIR Tuflite 9 ft does it for me.

I've had both 8' 4" and 9' in Tuflite WIR and the're good boards, esp with the nose concave and flattish rocker...not the same feeling as foam (which I now prefer) and a bit "floaty"..but def a wave magnet....and like Tuflite, near indestructable..
Hope this helps.

+1

If you can wait till just after easter. I always find there are more long boards for sale leading into winter. Even the shops will drop there prices in winter as they want to turn boards over and sales are slower over winter.

On the sunny coast I would call into either Beach beat ( across road from Alex Surf club ) or Da Bomb ( Next to rivers at the Plaza in Maroochydore) Both are good local shops and have second hand Longboards / Mid length at pretty good prices.

I would also look at something like a 8 foot - 7S. these are a pretty good allrounder for someone getting back into things.
