Have had a lock box for a couple of years now, done the job brilliantly, cant believe I used to stash my key in a towel or in the wheel arch

Noticed lately that it is starting to jam a bit and noticed some saltiness in and around the number dial and the lock, would a squirt of Inox or similar fix this up. ould hate for it to jam shut and leave me stranded!

I gave it a rinse in fresh water and this appears to have brought out the saltiness more.

WD40 to loosen it up and clean out the salt, then Lanox to protect it from happening so soon again. I use Lanox on an outboard that loves outdoors on the back of my boat and it still looks brand new after 10 years. Apply once every 6 months,

Sorry to butt in guys but was curious to see your thoughts on using a lock box. Have been keen to buy one as I'm worried about keeping my key in my wetty when I surf and then all that salt water getting into the car lock and if it starts rusting down the track.

Are they really that effective? My view was you're basically providing burglers a clear view of where your key is being hidden and they can easily find a means of opening the box while you've gone for a surf. Does that/ will that happen a lot?

Cheers.

I had trouble late one afternoon. Light went right down and i couldn't work out the combo. Took about 20 or so minutes to get it..
I use a key in my wettie. Just suck it before using and i only use it for the door anyway.. Works for me. Summer is a bit harder as it then has to go in boardies and i have pocked myself with it before

Have one and would recommend them to anyone. But I used to hide my cars without a lock for years 2.

A tip for the late surf is only change a few numbers ie don't scramble the **** out if it then you can easily remember say 2 clicks down on the second number and 4th. The guy stealing your car doesn't know the combo

I was told to spray it with wd as soon as I got it, mine hasn't rusted

YES you would hate that. Because it happened to me!!

Came in from a surf and the lock had seized. (It had been getting a bit stiff front the salt but still worked fine so I didn't think anything of it)

Had to walk FREEZING COLD AND WET in my wettie with my board under my arm 2-3km to the closest servo, the guy leant me a set of bolt cutters. Walked back with surfboard and bolt cutters.. Alot of funny looks from passing cars

Luckily my key is a proximity key so I didn't need to get it out, just get it 'near' the drivers side door.

Was terrible experience though. Lesson learned. If it starts jamming. REPLACE!!

Yeah thats my fear, being stranded, some places I surf there is no servo for heaps of KM ha ha

Have had the bad light issue as well, just managed to get it and the next arvo session I put it where a street light would put enough light on it when I wiggled it into view.

Have never worried about people getting the key out of it, I generally dont put it where it is obvious like i have seen some people. I think the rat bags that bust cars do it opportunistically and spend minimal time, in some cases just bust open the window or have a quick look for the key under the arch. Would take a bit of time to get into the lock box I would think.

Much higher risk by leaving your towel on the beach with it wrapped up or putting the key under the arch.

The spare key is not a bad idea as well.

Will WD40 it when I get home, I will be okay to just spray it right in there and over the key pad?
Is Lanox same company as Inox? That Inox is amazing on fishing gear.

i use one.. recently my son came and took the key out while i was surfing... i came back and opened it and no key? i thought how the **** did i do that ? magic

but i used to leave it in the tray...but after the vanders incident in byron , on his advice i leave it on the door in the open view..that way anyone tampering with it will be plainly obvious.

Good question........

1. he was too lazy to walk to the beach and was punished as a result

2. wrong place wrong time

3. some pricks thought they would break into his car via his surflock and take it for a joyride whilst taking items of liquid value

4. a combination of all of the above

If your car is stolen by means of the ragbag getting into key lock, then your insurance will not pay up. Only aami and Nrma will.
