Gee I like Kelly Slater. Seemed a reasonable sort of bloke for someone with 11 world titles, cared for the enviroment most people say nice things about him. As such I was interested to see that he was firing up his own brand of clothing usuing enviro friendly manufacturing/produtcs etc. So today he released said brand and I for one am completely appalled at the pricing....I mean come on $125 US for a pair of shorts...$78 bucks for a shirt....understand its his company and he can charge whet he wants but when companies like Patagonia are realeasing there patent wetsuit rubber to everyone beacuse its more enviromentaly friendly the whole look anfeel of his brand and the clothes looks way out of whack for me....it clearly looks like he is doing it for the dollar not to get better products on the market

Sounds like Just another surf brand.

Different marketing strategy but same **** product sold at the same inflated prices...

Just noticed on eBay that you can pick up your quicksilver stuff at big w and wooolworths

Kelly has had stuff out for at least a year under the name "Kummunity Project". I bought a good new tail pad off e-bay for $30 & the double & triple board bags looked good for how much they were $180/$220.

I reckon the retail price will settle down, a sale will come along & you'll get those shorts for $35/$40 like all the other big name surf brands. If you release something at a high price, it can then settle down to a high price.

To quote the article
And, perfectly affordable: Remember, OuterKnown is a step above a surf brand, so don’t expect surf prices. But given the quality of the product, it’s very reasonable.

I tend to agree. Whilst out reach of some of the surf market it's clear that is not who they are aiming at. I think it will do ok

Hurley n Oakely sell boardied for $200 let's not forget.

yeah but you could argue that so is Patagonia who are not charging as much and with there worn wear program you can pretty much have clothes for life....plus I know at the Torquay shop if you bring old hoodies and stuff in over winter they will donate to homeless youth and give you a % off your purchase...

I just reckon buy the pricing he has alienated a fair percentage of surfers and potentially lost a lot of his market...because lets face it 90% of the world are going to just go Kelly who ? hes then just competing against all the other brands and because they don't know who he is that extra leverage he could of used by being well known is worth **** all

i say good on him.

look its not like surfers are rolling around in casholla like tennis golf and motor sport peeps.

after his comp life is gone he will make cash from books and guests appearances thats it.

unless he has some sort of business to keep him in the lifestyle he's use to.

you don't have to support him, don't buy it. i won't be.

but he has to do something.

That 75 mil story is false Cobra. And I think the second post is 2.

But he is worth a chunk...
Owned 5% of quicksilver at one stage.
A few % of Go pro. He sold a few million$ worth when it floated on the stock exchange.

Supposedly he is around $10 mil a year for the last few.

Not bad coin at all. But not golfer money..

The thing that annoyed me was the new label was supposed to be for all the good reasons and not about making $. And by the prices it seems he is keen to make a $ or 2.

Good on him but he won't be getting my hard earned.

I'll wait until it's on the rack at Sideways. Ok I will be 6 months behind the times but it will be cheap.

I've funded a number of clothing brands over the years, from big brands to emerging ones. Some have failed a couple have thrived. The most successful one has nearly 400k followers on Instagram & virtually all sales are online.

You would be surprised who will pay what for clothes.
