Skateboarding, surfing, baseball/softball, sport climbing and karate have been recommended for inclusion at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The five new sports would take place over 18 events and include 474 more athletes.Games hosts are being given a chance to bring in one or more sports popular in their country to boost ratings and attract greater sponsorship.

The International Olympic Committee will make a final decision next August.Eight sports from a total of 26 federations were shortlisted, with bowling, squash and wushu missing out.

"This package of events represents both traditional and emerging, youth-focused events, all of which are popular both in Japan and internationally," said a statement from the Tokyo 2020 organising committee.

International Surfing Association president Fernando Aguerre said: "Surfing embodies a cool, playful lifestyle that would add a completely new element to the programme, helping the Games reach new fans through live action and stunning broadcast opportunities."

Japan has waves in July/August & its nice n warm in n out of the water. Could be held in Chiba or down on the Izu Peninsular in front of the Yamatokan. Other option is Kamakura, good option for spectators, but bad option for swell consistency. Chiba is close to the Narita International airport. Yamatokan is easy for public transport & considered to be one of the best surf breaks close to Tokyo. Nice hotels around it within walking distance to the beach. Might go to this one, hopefully its there.

Most Olympic stadiums become white elephants anyway. Sydney has done well to make the most of the infrastructure it built. Barcelona and Greece are two fine examples of letting things fall down immediately afterwards. There are countless others. Its a shame.

Check out the plans for the World Cup in Quatar - they are building huge stadiums that will never be used again - will be shipped to other countries at the conclusion of the games. Some people have more money than sense

If they were to throw some decent money at a wave pool they could come up with something amazing.

I hear what your saying but reckon the wavegarden one looks pretty sweet to me...surely they could make something like that viable

skateboarding should have been n there years ago. the 666 crew are dreaming if they want to compete against that . Style, skill, big balls, and something that is relevant to the young....666 well im not sure what it has to offer compared to that,i would be intrested to hear though.

drug testing might be a problem for the sk8ers ...then agin im pretty sure all those pensioners riding a 666 are just not abusing prescription drugs

surfing......the wavegarden would be good, but after watching the wings will make you fly one, well it was pretty ****.

Like snowboarding Chrispy?

Didnt the guy who won the first gold get done for weed and had his medal taken off him.

Who would have thought, snowboarders and weed.. shocked..

This was posted by ASL the other day, one of the Japanese wave pools that got shut a few years back.

Looks like a bit of fun.. Don't know about a full blown event though?

The spectators want to see the blood and competitors like the thrills that recreational pharmaceuticals provide. A match made in heaven surely.

Yeah the Winter Olympics are great..

Much more watchable then some bloke running around a track or swimming in a pool.

As you said lots of action, lots of excitement. Not sure if an event in a 2 ft wave pool would be that great. Maybe for the general public and not surfers? I say it would be great promotion for those generating their $ from surfing but prefer they just gave it a miss..

Although with the Sharks around a few pools around the place would be good.
