Hi all,

I am a newbie to surfing, I hear talk from older surfers that if one know how to read the wind, one can predict the currents and know when jelly fish are going to be inbound.

Today I got stung by a swarm of man of wars, not looking to repeat the experience if possible.

Getting stung actually builds up your bodies defence to foreign bodies and white blood cells. So get stung more and eventually your body will be immune to jellyfish stings.
That's my bullsh1t for the day.

welcome Unraveler......fear not with the stinkers too much unless you live north of Exmouth on the West or North Queensland on the east where the nice and friendly Box Jelly Fish likes to hang out. As a general rule jellies come into shore due to warmer waters and persistent onshore winds....so after a few days of an onshore like a NE over here on the east you will see lots of blue bottles hanging out waiting to annoy you. If you want to avoid them get yourself a costume / stocking and cover yrself head to toe or if you are really concerned just stay out of the water. Bluies shouldn't kill ya - just make you un-comfortable for a few mins....the upside being that if they are keeping everyone out of the waves then you can cover up and get yourself some uncrowded ones If they do annoy ya wash off in warm water and rub on some antihistamine or anaesthetic ointment. Coke-cola and vinegar have also been touted as good solutions. Lots of people suggest that urine can have a nice soothing effect - not sure if I agree with this one but its probably best to try this one when its your mates who get stung not yourself

I was thinking of getting a low rent steamer, just for stinger protection. Adrenalin have a 1.5 that can be picked up for around $140, they're not intended to keep you warm, but they probably would still go some way to taking off a bit of the chill.

On the subject of building up immunity there may be some evidence of it, I recently saw a doco and some white fella went netting with some black fella way up north.

They were in thigh deep water and the white fella had to wear pantyhose for protection, but the black fella didn't need anything because they were immune to the stings.

Mind you, they had a good 50,000 year head start on the rest of us.

apparently there are some of these things floating around and they eat bluebottles
as a general rule a couple of prolonged days of strong north east wind combined with a strong southward current in summer on the east coast and the blueys will show up!
jellyfish are generally the least of your problems on the east coast!

Hello!

Yeah that jolted my memory abit, I do believe the other surfer said something about NE winds that will blow them towards the shore. I dunno how to read winds, how will I know at the beach what way is the wind blowing?

why in WA does it require heat and consistent easterlies (offshores) for the stingers to show up. Its the reverse of thge conditions descibed on the east coast ?
