Hypo gets Thunderstruck (part 6)
When Hypo returned to the house Peanut and Cheryl had surfaced. Also chatting with them was Cheryl's girlfriend Cassie.
"Hey" said Peanut "why don't we all go into town tonight, the rodeo is on."
Hypo wasn't really into it, but he went along anyway, and Cassie seemed kind of friendly towards him.
After finding their way into town and getting some seats, Cassie offered to show Hypo around the cattle and horse yards. They chatted with some of the contestants who Cassie knew. One of the guys, Greg was friendly and showed them both around behind the ring.
"So John," he said to Hypo, "do you like a challenge?"
"Sometimes" replied Hypo
"There's a novice bull ride if your interested" he said
"Nah" said hypo, "I'll just get smashed"
"It's a $100 for each second you can stay on if you stay on the longest," Greg added.
Hmm, thought Hypo, I could do with some cash he thought.
I mean how hard can it be, its just a novice bull ride.
"OK said Hypo where do I sign up"
"Are you sure about this John?" asked Cassie
"Yeah said Hypo, Ill be ok"
"Yes," added Greg, "he'll be fine"
Hypo signed up for the ride and they gave him a helmet, a padded vest and some boots.
Greg ran him through the basics of what to do.
Cassie went back up to the stadium and sat with Peanut and Cheryl
"So wheres Hypo?" asked Peanut
"Oh he's still down the yard talking to the cowboys" replied Cassie coyly.
A few minutes later the announcer began his wind up....
"OK ladies and gentlemen we have a special event tonight...."
"The novice bull ride!!!"
Our final contestant for the evening is Mr Johnnyyyyy Mcevoyyyyyy!!!!
"What??!" exclaimed Peanut
Cassie was laughing her face off
"He's going to get killed" said Peanut, and if he gets killed, Jockey will kill me!"
The announcer continued,"Ok ladies and gentlemen Johnnys ride tonight is a mean old bull by the name of Thunderstruck!"
"They tell me Johnnys a surfer boy and we all know Thunderstruck don't like surfer boys.... ain't that right folks?!!"
The crowd was pumped up.
Hypo was being lowered onto the bull as Greg shouted last minute instructions.
The other cowboys were taunting Hypo and laughing at his ultimate demise.
Hypo was beyond feeling scared, but he was also beyond bailing out.
This bull was farkn big and angry.
Then the music started over the loud speakers AC/DC Thunderstruck!!
The crowd was screaming chanting thunder! thunder! thunder! thunder! thunder!
Greg stayed with him and then the shute opened......
For a split second the bull was still and then it exploded into the ring
Talk about a rush.........
It bucked, twisted, spun around, did everything to dislodge the terrified Hypo.
All Hypo could do was hang on and lean back as instructed
The music, the lights, the crowd, the bull, was just one blur of sound, color and light.
Then Hypo felt weightless, he was flying through the air and came down into the mud and manure with a thud.
He stayed there until a rider and a clown picked him up
He walked back to the safety of the yard and the crowd was going berserk!!
"5 seconds ladies and gentlemen, 5 seconds and $500!!" the announcer bellowed
"Hey Johnny" the announcer teased, "you been thunderstruck!! whoo hoo!!"
Hypo felt elated as the crowd cheered him and he gave them a wave as he walked back.
Greg was stoked for him, Hypo gave him a $100, which he appreciated.
When he got back to the stands Peanut and the girls made a big fuss over him.
On the ride home Hypo fell fast asleep in the back of the car.
They carried him inside and put him in the bath.
Cassie cleaned him up and they put him in his bed.
The last thing Hypo remembers of the evening was the feel of Cassie's warm, scented, naked body next to his as he drifted back to a deep sleep.

The Kindness of a 'Stranger'

Hypo woke instinctively at 5am. He disentangled himself from Cassie and got up stiffly to check the surf. She murmured to him as he was about to leave.
"Im just going to look at the surf, be back soon"
"Ok" she said sleepily
Hypo left the house and the pup followed.
Hypo loved this time of day, he loved the newness of it.
The ocean had that glassy early morning look.
It was still about 3 foot and offshore so he decided to get his board.
On the way along the track he passed a stranger who gave him a nod and he noticed on his arm a tattoo not dissimilar to one that Jimmy used to have. Hypo was intrigued.
When he found his way back to the shoreline the stranger was already in the line up.
Hypo paddled out and sat nearby.
The next hour was spent sharing waves, but not much was spoken. The guy didnt seem to be the chatty type, but not unfriendly either.
By about 7am the line up was getting busier and Hypo headed to shore. He saw the stranger leave also in an old ute.
When he got back to the house he showered and climbed in bed next to Cassie. Now this is the way to start the day he thought to himself.
He spent the weekend with Cassie and she left Sunday night, as she had a job to go to in town, on Monday morning. They had enjoyed each others company and planned to meet up again next weekend.
Peanut laughed to himself as that week Hypo spent his time around the house whistling. Geez, he's in love, Peanut thought.
Hypo saw the stranger a couple of times and had to ask him about his tattoo. The guy didnt open up much, but when Hypo mentioned Jimmy he became less defensive. Turns out he and Jimmy were mates a long time ago when they were teenagers. The tattoos were kind of a brotherhood thing that he, Jimmy and two other guys got together. The tattoos were distinctive in their simplicity. No color just blue ink.
He didnt know that Jimmy had passed on and was saddened by it.
Eric been living a partly reclusive life for the last 15 years. He had bought a 100 acres of land down the coast, years ago, and as it was surrounded by national park and forestry he had been able to maintain his lifestyle. He only used to come up and surf the beach breaks around the point when there was no waves down his way.
Hypo didnt know much about the surf down that way. Most of it was inaccessible by car and a dangerous in a boat when the seas were high.
"Theres a swell on its way" said Eric
"Yeah so I've heard" said Hypo
"If you like I can show you a spot that works when it gets big, but you'll need to bring your kahunas with you" he laughed
"Lefts or rights?" asked Hypo
"Both" said Eric
"But they are different waves" "It can be fun at 3 to 5 feet and scary from 6 feet up"
"Jimmy used to love it there" "Its just a reef sitting about 500 meters off the coast"
"No one goes there much as its not really accessible with a car"
"Bunch of pros and cameras were sniffing around there once, but fortunately the conditions weren't right for it. They asked me about it and I said Id never seen a rideable wave out there he-he"
"So how do we get there?" asked Hypo
"By boat" "Meet me at the point early in the morning" "I think it will be on tomorrow" "I can launch from the boat ramp here"
"OK" agreed Hypo
Sure enough the next day the surf was up.
The point looked OK and if Eric hadn't of made the offer, Hypo would have gone out at the point.
They chugged out to sea from the boat ramp and traveled about 8 k's down the coast.
Eric was right about the accessibility, it was sheer rock cliff all along that part of the coast with dense bush right to the edge.
Eric steered the craft and as they rounded the coast the break came into view.
"There she is" said Eric
Hypo looked at the set up
A left and right peak peeling off over a reef, size he guessed was 4 to 6 feet.
"The reef is the shallowest at the start" said Eric, "mostly cungi though so if you hit it, it wont be too bad"
Hypo felt a burst of energy and a slight panic as he got ready.
The wave looked like it had it all, steep take off, barrel, and a workable wall.
They jumped in together and Eric showed Hypo where to sit, almost coaching him.
A set came through and Eric watched as Hypo paddled excitedly into the path of a 6 foot A frame.
Hypo made the drop, but the speed of the wave overtook him
"Ah you'll get the hang of it" said Eric as he paddled into a wave from the second set and expertly took a really high line as Hypo watched his head rise and fall, from the back of the wave, along its length.
Hypo soon settled in and had some great satisfying rides. Nice fast walls.
After a few hours the tide became too low to ride the break, they chugged back to shore for some rest under the trees and Eric started a fire and cooked some fish, he had brought, that they ate with fresh bread and washed down with tank water.
"This is the life eh John?" Eric said
"That's for sure said Hypo, That's for sure."
Hypo sat there and took it all in.
He thought about how the ocean had given him so much and just how fortunate he was......
