3/2 surfing this mornings 5.7 degrees. Don't think the numerous holes nor re-patched zip letting in water helps. At least no wind?

Did a Suba (from SB forum) once and the locals watching me said I was crazy surfing in boardies on a winter morn. I said it was refreshing, they said my lips were blue

Have you tried the chest zips doggy ? From what I read they are supposed to give you a better fit so warmer and more waterproof .

I still like the back zip, just spend the money on the 100% stretch neoprene and they are fine. I know a bloke who knows a bit about them and he told me....
a shoulder zip will last less cause you stretch the **** of them getting in and out but will be slightly easier to paddle in, they probably let in less water but not noticeable the back zip seals are good now. I just don't see myself paying more for the same suit with a shoulder zip and know it is going to last shorter than a back zip.

How cold does it get over there Doggie??

My current one is

longreefsurf.com.au/wetsuits/mens-wetsuits/steamers-longreefsurf

It's pretty cheap actually, close to what I payed. I have a nice mate who sorts us out...

Have heard the same SP apparently you need to stretch them a fair bit to get them on so placing a fair stretch on the seals .
Strange that doggies mate reckons they are loose in the shoulders you would think they would need to be tighter to be more waterproof

I think it's how the zip pulls the suit shut that makes them feel loose but mine feels loose in the shoulders 2, I reckon it is about getting one that fits right, I tried on about 5 brands before I chose the one I wanted.

The water proof thing is more to do with not having a zip through the neck where water is likely to get in. Also the flap on the shoulder zips seal in a direction That makes water hard to get to them. where as the back seal cause it's vertical will be more likely to let some water in.

pffft soft if you have the right gear you don't get cold if there is frost on the ground I use an Excel infinity 4/3 glued and semed , but I have 4 x 4/3 suits don't like putting on a wet wet suit and they take two days to dry atm .Does take the breath away when there has been some snow around , doesn't happen too much , If I weir the Excel when it's not so cold I just heat up too much

For Sydney, never any higher than 3/2, if I need more I just layer up underneath with a rashly or two.

Never wore my steamer last year, went all winter with a short legged 3/2 oneil.

I havnt used one yet but the more I look at front zips I think they are the way to go. Saying that my back zip Oneil is great for over here, water temp dosnt get below 16c. Ive had times when parts of it are still dry after a long surf!!

I have a 2mm triple x, warm but a prick to put on and take off (even with bags) & one size to big lol. I also have a 3/2 o'neil and I love it except the zipper comes down all the time and it fills up with water. Not good when you are charging out to beat the sets....aargh!

PS nice waves from NZ Ted, why do cold waves always look better. I hate the ice cream headaches in under 12c water temps

I migrated to a front chest zip last winter after my Psycho died a natural death after 4 good winters....I am stoked with the new wettie after 1.5 winters of use. It was a right pain the ass to get in and out of for about 10 surfs then it loosened up a bit and I got the technique sorted. I am never going back to a zipper on the back. The front one is miles better. Love it.

Good to know that you got four winters out of it, did you rinse it in fresh water after surfing Ted?

yep Doggie as TB says rinse with freshwater after every use and try to keep it out of direct sunlight when drying. I also give it a massive soak after winter before storing it away.

Was thinking the same Towball . That's why I prefer the 3/2 s I can layer up with vests as needed and still wear them 6 months of the year . Still the 4/3 Xcell would be nice ,decisions , decisions .Make that 9 months of the year .

I always chuck mine in the shower and give it a rinse before I jump in.

I do the same Ted before I store it, I get a 20lt bucket chuck the wettie in and fill with cold water and leave for two hours and then hang to dry.

I did the same with my RCs as well but the only one to last that long was a Ultimate elasto and that was an awesome wettie

Must admit not that kind to mine get home chuck them on the clothes line give them a blast with the garden hose. Next day they are back in the back of the ute waiting for the next surf . Those rip curl ultimate elasto suits do look good doggo . Tossing up between them and the Xcell and whether to grab a 4/3 or another 3/2

Anything under 12 degree water and cold air temps, I'd be in a 4/3 Tassie. And I don't like putting things under my wettie, nude all the way.... By the time you put all the stuff on under and over it you may as well just be in a thicker suit, you'll get better mobility to.

Only going to get colder to...
