I stood looking at my local Beachy this morning (as local as it can get when you live 75 km away) and thought this looks trash. I would rate it 2 out of 10, not very big, a northerly bump, no real banks and waves are doubling up and just looked ordinary. Anyway the young bloke is keen so I figure I'll go out anyway. Well 1 1/2 hours later I'd had some nice little waves, some of my mates and his mates turned up so we had a good chat, the young guy got a screamer he is still talking about and while it wasn't all time, it was well worth getting wet for.

This has happened a few times now, it looks crap, I go out anyway and it turns out to be not half bad. I have long since given up looking at the cameras and just go anyway.

Cheers

I reckon if you've driven around and checked everything out and its still no good its best to just paddle out somewhere anyway. If you dont you end up going home with the sh#ts. It beats work.

A good mate of mine spends so much time checking the surf, it's ridiculous. The other day this happened;

He says, "have you checked anywhere else?".
I say, "No, but where's going to be any better, why waste your time?".

I have a 1 minute look, yep, it's surfable. 2 minutes later I'm suited up, and heading for the water.

1.5 hours later, I come in after a great session, and he's decided he'll head out now.

In that 1.5hrs wasted, I would have had time to mow the lawn, do some weed spraying, give the missus one, and maybe even tell her to mow her lawn!

I have a %@! as well but have yet to progress to surfing it due to a back injury.

Im pretty much with you - anything better than 2/10 at first spot and Im on it. Last coupla weeks boofy and I rocked up at ours and were met with bumpy nthly conditions, but we went out anyway - and ended up having 2 of the most fun surfs we've had in ages.

On a rare occasion I may check a 2nd spot but not too often. I also generally surf within walking distance from a coffee shop so if surf check #1 doesnt pan out its often "fk this, lets get a coffee"
(more often than not its "fk this, lets go out for 1/2hr and then get a coffee)
