I am from Sydney & hope to be surfing Victoria (somewhere) early next week.

I look at the map for the Melbourne area

and it is not the surfing spots.

And I just don't get it, especially the swell and the period of the wave.
Either:
1. Melbourne is not up a creek, the other side of Port Philip Bay
2. "Melbourne" is short for Melbourne's favourite surf coast (Jan Juc to Bells)
3. Seabreeze is lying to Melbourne in an attempt to cheer it up.

What gives?
Where is the forecast for Torquay to Anglesea?

N, NW or W winds and a reasonable swell you should head to Torquay...bigger the swell further west you can keep going with good options
N-NE winds and small swell go to the east coast of Phillip Island
E wind and your cactus unless you have a boat/ski
SW wind look for a protected spot on either coast...west coast probably has more options
No swell keep going west until you go past Cape Otway and watch out for sharks

Whilst in Melbourne, check out some cool laneways.

1) Off Bourke Street, Between Cosgrove Lane & Spencer Street, you will find a weird old unmarked lane. Extremely narrow entrance off Bourke, which is probably the feature.
2) Brown Alley is a feature. Historic, and from an old world. Nice restaurant on the South East end of the lane. Also a great little pub, opposite, south of Little Bourke. Look for Red... They sell beer! Mmmm beer... Awesome Japanese eating on that corner too.
3) Healy's Lane, off Little Lonsdale. Some great little cheap eats along there...

That is only 3, of about 40 great lanes.

"Makesurf" - I think you will find that the 'Melbourne' swell and wind forecast is somewhat averaged... Not sure, check with Laurie. Swell should be generic ground swell moving through Central Victorian (Surf) Zones... Winds are probably averaged from a few points, it could actually be central Melbourne. But at this time of year, we don't get too much seabreeze effect anyway.

When ABC Radio quotes the temperature in Sydney, they will usually note some like, "it's 25 degrees in Sydney, and that's average". 25 is the average between CBD, Beaches, Parramatta, and The Hills... or something... Google it... someone will have a definition of exactly what Sydney's Average Temp is... ie - 4 or 5 reference points, which are averaged.

not sure of the definition and too lazy to google it but I can assure you that once you get about 10km from the beach in the summer the sea breeze has lost its effectiveness and its can be a good 5 degrees warmer easily - based on many years commuting between work in North Ryde and home in Manly. Consequently in winter its the opposite effect. A pain in the neck.

I am missing Melbourne using,, amoung other things the Sorrento ferry.
Hoping to get some sailboarding at Sandy Point.
