Forester, good on the freeway, will fit a board under 9'6", goes on the beach, the new body style can fit a fully grown human (195cm) in the back seats with the front seats pushed all the way back

Or

Peugeot think its the 207, can fit a lb up to about 9'1" (and not much else), not sure about the newer models

Yeah, a Forester just under $20k is going to be a pretty reliable surf mobile.

Next options are Vans under $20k. Plenty to chose from...

A Twenty Grand Hilux maybe...

Yeah have to agree with Weirsy - 'cept I'll have a HG Kingswood Wagon - 186 stroked out to 208 , triples , leave the coloumn change (beef it up) set of tasteful chromies , 12V plug for the esky & piss , swag in the back , fit the boards inside & on top.

My chick has a Pathfinder and it fits her SUP in no drama at all. Also its good fun off the road as well when opportunities arise and its perfect for our regular Point Plomer get aways. Thirsty on fuel though it must be said. As she only drives 10km to work its not too big a deal for us - I drive a Hyundai Getz - so our average fuel bill is fine!!!!

Falcon wagons are very long, I suspect they can go better than 9.6
On the down side, they're thirsty unless they're gas and they don't make them anymore, so finding a good one would be hard.

If you could tolerate the brand embaresment and the high cost of parts, old Volvo wagons were very long.

You could get a good tarargo for that money, and I can guarantee that they will swallow a 10.6 board into the passenger footwell and still have over a foot to spare at the back.

I'm saving up for a Hyundai iload with a diesel and an auto, they are cavernous

One of the long board chicks at my local beach has one and she fits her 9'3" in it no problem at all. She has racks coming down off the roof. Nice setup.

Old hilux ute fitted out with drawers in the back . One for the work gear one for the wetsuits/ wax / sunscreen . Saves packing and unpacking gear . Get a diesel with a snorkel goes anywhere and can't kill them .
. Still regretting selling mine to get a navara . What was I thinking

If you need to drive on the beach Suburu and Suzuki make nice light 4WD.

If you dont think you'll go checking out beachies way up yonder, then the VW vans are nice.

I've got my late father in law's 2005 Transporter camper, looks the goods and will be for sale soon for a tad over $20k.

My 2003 VW Touareg doesn't fit a board in unless you tool around with head rests and remove fins..... but it's a lovely beast for $23k.....

For the record, the current model Suby Forester fits a 9'6 Malibu internally, threaded between the seats. With roof racks, you can comfortably stack heaps of boards!!

With the split rear seats, the child seat can stay put, plus you can still still get a 9'6 inside.

On driving holidays, boards on roof, wife often sits out back with the kid, and we load things into the passenger seat area, and 1/3 of cargo area, and the dog gets 2/3 of the rear cargo area.

Fully loaded, I can still get 7.0's... 7 litres per 100 km on the highway. Tank range of around 650km for a 52.5 litre fill. Which is about 8.0 average. Claimed is 7.2/9.3/12.9. Highway, combined, city....

Will never forget seeing a Subaru forester with roof racks piled up about 2 meters high with gear , towing a box trailer loaded about 4 meters high with gear bogged up to the car body in sand trying to get on the barge to Fraser Island . When we pulled up behind the Canadian tourist driver and asked what they were up to he was shocked he had gotten bogged as he was driving a 4 WD . Poor bastard is probably still sitting there .
Not bagging the car just how naive these tourists are that they let onto Fraser Island . Can't say we are surprised there has been a few killed over there in 4 WD accidents .
Last time we went over it was lucky the missus didn't kill a few more in camping ground rage .Those backpackers are dirty , noisy rude pricks . Should feed a few more to the dingos

Hyundai Tuscon, should be able to get 1 around 2-3 yrs old ( auto ) for well under 20k now.
Should still be able to get one with some factory warranty ( 5 years )
I have had mine for 4 years now and it hasn't mised a beat and way cheaper $$$ to service than a subi. fits a 9'1" easy without touching the passenger seat. Also has side rails for roof racks.
OK on fuel, won't break any speed records but cruises at 115-120 k's fine.
Not to bad IMO
