I've owned and ridden this 9'6" gordon woods balsa pig for 40 odd years and have never been able to find it's birthday. The best I can tell is somewhere between 56 and 64. Does anyone know more about it?

I think you could narrow that down a bit.

56 was when the Malibu team came to Oz and he first saw them.

By 64, almost everything was PU and glass.

57 to 62 would be my range, maybe even 57 to 60

"Atlas-Woods was a NZ company (Atlas) using materials and experience sourced from Australia's Gordon Woods Surfboards,Brookvale."

Cheers Spazz for that.....I have an Atlas Woods under the house back in NZ and always wondered when it was built - I am hoping its still there . I brought it for $20 from a guy who used to work with my old man back in about 1992...it was in terrible shape - it had been in their Mahia Bach roof for 20 plus yrs gathering dust. Had lots of holes and the fin needed to be-attached but it went super well. I used it for years. I put a leg rope plug in it as well.

I will see if I can dig up some old ones but to be honest it might be a struggle. I am not sure when I will see that board again but will post some pics when I do.

Yeah, great site....

Shame it's so hard to use and find stuff on.

Does the board have any glass on it? Or is it just Balsa?

Looks a lot like the photo halfway down form 57 and notes below they started glassing them in 58. So if there is any glass over the balsa I'd guess after 58.

I scrolled down further and there are some logos 2, I'd say more evidence of pre 1960. circa 58 & 59, look similar?

And the logos post 1959 has the brookvale address, where as the one before didn't..

I read the whole lot again too, and really looked hard at the pics (as an aside, I've seen that pic of the 4 of them at DeeWhy beach with their boards dozens of times and it's only today that I found out who Ross Renwick was)

It's pretty faithful to the original Velzy pig design, even the logo shape is identical to the one Velzy still uses today, so I'm going for 57/58.

Yep, I'm with you. You nailed it straight off with your first post...

And yeah, renwick pops up a fair bit through it, amazing the amount of people that have made contribution or been involved in thing but you never really hear of them, bit of a shame really.

I had alook at the research site and found this pic. of woods outside his factory in 1960. The board in the foreground looks very similar to mine. My board is glassed. Looking at the pics in the link supplied- it is very similar to the one second from the left but with a wider tail.

after readingthis article I'm guessing 58/59
