So,

In the recent competition, I rode my ECS log, a great board. But as everyone well knows logs are obviously not aimed at anything other than nose riding. Yes I had a few fives and tens in my heats but that wasn't enough to win it.

As our regulations with surfing Tasmania say that our mals must be at least 9'1 for competitions, I cannot ride one of ECS's comp mals, a shame really. HAs anyone had any experience on their 'Modern' shape? Any comments? http://www.ecsboards.com.au/modern1 By looking at the description can anyone give me and idea of the board?

An alternative is to get one of my other sponsors to get me a Mctav or something along those lines, issue is that may be very difficult to afford and I need to buy it before the end of this month. Any recommendations on a performance model?

Cheers,
Tom.

Rocker looks a tab low for HP surfing imho,I'm not a fan of the square tail on HP boards much prefer the rounded pin or straight out pin.

But hey that's just my thoughts.

I thought you would be the first to reply as soon as I typed Mctav I have a mactav at the moment, would love if it was't so heavy! It has a pin and flies! I ride it as a 3 fin as the two side bites are stuck in and will never come out. I stick the 8 inch center as far forward as possible and I have done some unreal snaps on it!

I want a model like it that is lighter, I think there are photos of it on my profile, the yellow mal.

Cheers,
Tom.

I may even buy a mal off Chris Fullston, the one who bet me in the comp, I want to get the one he was riding at Bruny. A lovely board, he makes some rippers!

Your mc is the original model by the sound of it,some say its a great hp board,if never ridden one.

I'm not educated to make solid comments on other brands (one eyed ) If your looking for a real
gun hp longboard have a look at this http://www.mctavish.com.au/surfboard/vuelo type of board.
For a young ripper like you I'd be hunting something like the link.

I'm not sure what it's called now new as some of their boards had name changes but if you can get a 2nd hand McT Razor it'd be right up your alley I'd think.

....if not the ECS 9'0. Lol.

Aside from the lighter glassing and pin, what else makes this my choice of boards? In your opinion. Do the concaves help much or what?
Nice looking board I must say!

Hi Tom.
At Christmas, my son bought an ECS 9'4" Modern mal. He is about 75kg and a very strong surfer. The board does everything. He gets 10's, can do big cutbacks regularly snaps off the lip, the board just goes!!! He rides it as a single fin, but for comps you couldn't go past this board. Set up as a thruster it would work a treat. A lot of comps now are judged on almost short board moves, with 2 second 5's counting as a nose ride, but there is a growing number of more traditional comps starting up as well. So your log for some, your modern for others.

Ah ok, sounds good Sandsy! Thanks for the input mate! Interesting to hear as he is only 10kg more and on a 9'4 surfs it well. !0kg lighter and 3 inch shorter may make a difference for me. What kind of fin does he have in it? Just a dolphin or another style of fin?

Cheers,
Tom.

A green thumb for stupidity.... Well **** me. Hp longboards are designed to surf as closely as possible to a shorty, hence why all good ones have a square tail. Check,it out yourself. Would love the experts opinion on why a pin is more hp. Lol I will give my short two year knowledge one why a square is preferred.

Interesting thought. Square tail help to ride similarly to a shorty, never though of it. I have only enjoyed pin tails from experience, my mctav mal with the pin turns unreal, doesn't bounce me off on the turns which I love! Thanks for the input though, I will give it some thought while looking for a new freedom stick

Teacake, pins are great in hollow surf. Round is my preference for shortys as I'm no hp surfer and enjoy the smoothness. Yet a square tail it way more whackabkle than any pin....just a..... Showing how uneducated they are giving more uneducated opinions

I have a round tail shorty and like you say, very smooth. I have found out of my three mals, one with the pin cuts in a bit more for me, the one with the square tail not quite a much and the other is a log. I think the pin is my preferred one as I am quite light and I can't actually get the boards to sink into the wave, just not heavy enough!

I agree the pin in good in hollow stuff though, rude it one day in 3-4 feet tubes running for around 200 meters, perfect waves. It held in so well I was hanging five the length of the waves while all the shorty riders were getting shacked!

Square Tails - yes as Chrispy said, they give a "brutal" pivot point at the tail, to help you go "whack"!

Hi Tom,
What boards have the winners been on lately, with you comps down there?

Also, be kind of mindful whether the judges seem to reward old school, or new school moves... which way are the weighting the scores...??? Or is it balanced... But you also also be judged on how well you link things together, smooth stylish cut-backs, etc...

Sitting back, thinking about all of that, might help you judge which board will be suitable.

The McTavish Vuelo is definately a very good choice for a HP board (at a price!). You can still do some old school tricks on it too..

On their own customs. Judging is pretty even I would say, like you say the vuelo is a nice board but at a price

Thanks for the input Very much appreciated!

Tom,
I think the Modern is probably the way to go...

ECS Comp Mal - Perhaps also ask the guys to measure 1 or 2 up, and see what the "finished" length is, along the rocker, and also in a straight line, measured tight, above the deck... Also check what your local comp rules are too... You might find that the Comp Mal actually fits within the rules...

Yeah I think I will go a Modern. Especially after what Sandsy has said. I might get him to measure, would be a good idea as I would love the comp mal in the bamboo. Comp rules are definitely 9'1, unfortunately. If we have a club comp it might be different

Thanks again Simondo!

Tom, somewhere on this site (tried to find it for you) there's the true story of a longboard comp back in the day where someone was denied entry cos their board was an inch short of the official comp length. The shaper was nearby and when he heard he whacked a big glob of resin (and I guess, hardener) on the nose of the board in question and, as soon as it had set, said, "tell em to measure it now."

Haha might try this! Better not though. If it were a shorty I could whack a nose cap on there...

Hi Tom.

He uses a fatboy style fin. They allow you to side slip in the steep sections and hold when on the nose. You might find that they are more suited to your log, than for comps. A dolphin fin and side biters would be more comp friendly.

i recall reading something in the 666 room a while ago about one of the guys that was sponsored or something by ECS had them making custom boards for him at one point, you could always see if they could whack an extra inch on one of the comp models if you like them

Thanks for the post Jarryd!

Pretty sure the customs are only the SUPs unfortunately.

May have a chat to them though.
