I know the Goldie beaches are in a terrible state, but did I just here the channel 9 news correctly? Is there debated now around charging a $2 fee to go on the beach to pay for repairs? Can't support that one.

I'm a little uneducated on the dynamics behind sand movement, but considering there is so much sand now on Kirra from the Tweed bypass sand pumping, would stopping this pumping move the sand from Kirra on to the beachies, or would that just make it worse. This is how it was in the good old days as in 25 years I have never seen the beachies (or Kirra) in such bad condition.

You'r,e will see it on Friday Daneli. What gets me is they are paying for dump trucks and dozers to move sand that is just getting washed away overnight. They should be putting boulders there and then let nature take care of itself
just don't think. Geez the broadwater is one massive sand dune atm. Sorry I'm starting to rant

They should just **** off the high rises, groynes etc that have ****ed up the natural flow of sand from the dunes down to the beach etc......beach erosion is natural and is naturally replaced....stop ****ing with it

They should just build a massive man made island off the coast that will fix it

They need to rebuild the rock wall at Kirra and start the sand pumping ships again.

Tallows at byron is insane at the moment to walk down to the beach its a 10ft drop down to the beach, Belongil there is like 10ms of beach left and in some parts its just smashing the man made rock walls. its quite scary

So why is it this bad atm ?

Global warming = bigger seas ?

Man ****ing with the coastline?

combination of both?

Surely someone has done some studies on it

its always happened.
palmy in the 60's

As far as the kirra thing goes; i hate the "it used to be perfect, Rose colour glasses" crap. It was always better surf when youre 16!.
Kirra has always had sand there- natural cycles people!!!

No groin, put up a groin, pump sand, pull down a groin, dont pump sand. Cant wait for the "Bring back the super bank" campain.

Thanks Joey for the Education ! Those pics certainly indicate the erosion has been around a while.

I was never on the "Bring back Kirra" campaign but wasn't sure if all the sand that is currently on Kirra would have previously ended up on the beachies, maybe not!

My recollection of surfing on the Goldie 20 years ago is definitely seen through rose coloured glasses. But I think it had more to do with fewer people in the water, and a youthful body rather than the groynes that were around at the time.

Hey Daneli,
NO that comment was never directed at you.
all the older guys at kirra go on about the good old day and how it used to be top to bottom barrels everyday
sure it got good during the cyclone season during the 90's but really!!!!
i remember the malfunction used to be run at kirra because it wasnt all that consitant; then it got moved to snapper because the comp hit during a good swell a couple of times. then the super bank came along and it got dittched to kingscliff

The beach between North wall Hastings River and Queens head has lost heaps of sand, the worst I,ve seen it. footings of houses lost to big seas used to be amongst the bush at New Brighton before they built over them and remember when the car bodies used to stabilise the dunes at Byron were exposed and in the paper. Even recent history shows the changing nature of the coastline but which is the dearest block of land in ya seaside suburb? The one getting washed away!

Not trying to steal joeyjojo's thunder but the commentary that goes with some of these photos on the following webpages (click through to the links with the photos) is pretty informative.

http://www.tweedsandbypass.nsw.gov.au/historic_photographs

Other stuff on there is reasonably interesting too on the history and various papers regarding the bypass.
