Hi All,
Got a couple of trips coming up later this year. Was thinking about getting a wider angle lens for my camera (17-25mm) for landscape shots etc, but the male child suggested the new'ish GoPro 5 black, as the video and stills are really high quality.
Seems a practical idea, shoot more video, then pull off frames for stills, or takes stills. I would still take my camera, just with a standard 50mm lens.
Has anyone had much experience with them?

Yep, Will do a great quality wide angle shot. No control over zoom or cropping or anything like that until you get to edit on a computer, but damn easy to carry about and gives a good wide angle perspective albeit a little fish eyed at times (this could be user error on my behalf as im definitely a point and shoot person)

Very good quality images, even if pinching stills from video.

Hell of a lot easier and less stuffing around that doing a lens swap on an DSLR.

Thanks for that. I believe that it has a couple of settings which aren't as wide angle. Will have to check it out. Sounds like the way to go.

If it's anything like the earlier models you have the choice of narrow, medium and wide aspect shots.

There's also an accessory lens cover that gets rid of the wide angle. Personally I would use that over digital trickery. A lens is a lens and they come with a fish eye.

They are better than they use to be, but they aren't the most stable software wise and resetting is a pain in the proverbial. The image and video quality is very high quality, but if portability isn't a priority I would use a SLR.

I have had five Heros over the years at work.

I've got Gopro 5 Black mate...its an action camera that's great for filming POV shots surfing, riding & stuff. It does alright for landscape shots & has a mode for timelapse. I'd consider it more of a video camera than a photo camera. If you think you could make use of it as an action camera and consider other options a bonus, consider one. But if you want a travel camera I'd suggest a bridge camera or a DSLR like Drip suggests.

Hi sandsy1 i follow a guy who vlogs in northern thailand and he uses the go pro 5 black ,his videos are pretty good and he is no pro ,apart from the hero5 he uses a gimble to stabilize the footage i cant remember the actual name of the top of my head but it does panning up and down ect powered by a single recharable batttery it has i think two drive motors in it ,around 300 dollers but when you add the two together they come out cheaper than some dslr cameras and the stabilty is amazing ,i have a go pro but its one of the cheaper models still gives a good picture though and its 2 r more years old ,i believe they have also released the go pro 6 dont quote me on it though i think the 5 is waterproof to 40 feet maybe metres anyway i think they are great cameras .

Hi vanders1 the guy is called graham and pie thats the vlog sight lives on a farm in the north of thailand near chang rai but he uses his go pro 5 for everything with that gimble ,if you watch a video without one and then with one it is truly amazing .
