Hi, back again with another question.

Last thread I posted was on getting a board. I found myself with a 2nd hand 9'5 Sean Nettleton board in great nick. Nicest stick I've had the pleasure of floating on.

I'm going to go custom this time, I was toying with the idea of ripping a few of my old comics up and getting them glassed onto the bottom of the board. I'm wondering if that is actually a fesible option.

I tried Google but it's stopped being a search engine and is more of a popularity contest now, which doesn't bring up desired results.

Cheers for any input

You'll need Acid-free paper for any base art on a board champion .... take a scan of the comic material & either take it on a memory stick or send it to your shaper via email to see if he can get it transferred onto the suitable paper stock for the board

Generally most paper is treated with caustic soda to bleach it and that reacts badly with glass/resin

Interesting puppy, I didn't know that , you're not just a pretty face

So that's why they often use rice paper I guess? I've never seen rice paper, but assuming it comes in A4 sheets, could he put some into an inkjet printer, then scan the comics onto the rice paper?

Or would the ink react with the resin?

Clearly you both have never met him . Sorry Pup could not resist

I have used these guys a few times - little bit pricey but very good service and results. Very quick turn around from my experience

some inks do some don't....problem is the rice paper doesn't have enough strength and buckles up when it goes through the printer...you have to tape it to paper sheets to get it to go through...then test to see if the ink runs...you can put the original comic down but when the paper wets out, the other side will come through and you will have very confusing looking art...Teds on the money, just make sure you are sitting when you get the quote rheema know there stuff when it comes to decals for surfboards, I have been using them for over 20 years...it's great to get some personal art on your custom.

also doing something that size would be pretty hard to glass i would imagine...i am a hack though.

me i would scan what you want and get it turned into a inlay which would give it way more pop and also strengthen your board

So what kind of material do they use for inlays? Is it your standard Avery vinyl, or something more classy like an Arlon product?

the way I do things like this is....

get rice paper from stationery supplier....COPY art work onto ricepaper, no need to scan.....an ordinary inkjet printer is all I use

after the side of the board is laminated where the artwork is to go......cut odd shaped bits of glass so theres no straight edges across the board(lips breack boards along straight runs of glass).....saturate the rice papered artwork and position it on top of the laminated coat(squee gee out the air bubbles)....then saturate the odd cuts of glass and squeegee on top of artwork....then yr ready to filler coat

More great answers thanks, just gave surf Decals an email. See what I hear back from them.
I've narrowed it down to 3 different strip's and graphic novels I'd like. Have to see which one I can get a decent scans/prints of.
