I know it's late, but I learned late this morning that a good friend of mine passed away on Sunday. A massive heart attack.... He was only around 45 with a wife and 2 kids. ... Amongst several positives is that he had provided very well for the family so far. But his life ended, and he was in his prime.

Lacey, you are very lucky, and you know it. You dodged the bullet of death, and you got life! I wish I could give Bernard the gift of life...

Live your life! Enjoy life. We get 1 shot at it... (As far as I know!)...

I learnt about it late because I had only physically met Bernard about 5 times, yet we spoke on the phone every 2-4 weeks about work... I was his Estimator. He knew what I did, and i knew what he did... We spoke on Friday... He's gone now.... I emailed him on Monday with results from our Friday discussion... His wife emailed this morning to inform me... I'm shocked... Bern and I spoke over the phone all the time... He was such a good friend...

**** happens... But he was a great bloke... I'm sad though... But I'm fine...

Condolences Simondo.
I turn 45 this year.
I train most mornings at 5am over the past 15 months after not doing much over the past 20 years.
My motivation when alarm goes off at 4:30 am is that I want to be on this planet for as long as possible to take care of my wife and 3 kids and to see them grow up.
Way too young to go

unfortunately exercising helps but that's only a part of it.

plenty of fit people die from heart attacks too.

there are so many factors to consider

get your doctor to do the normal tests and the heart stress test too- heart stress test is what I didn't get done, didn't even know about them.

I was extremely lucky

Wow, 45, that's bad,

from personal experience, I can say that his kids are going to miss out on seeing him at his best, when they get to see his joy at becoming a grandad and watching him interact with their children.

Next time I go for my 6 monthly blood pressure script, I going to ask for a stress test.

Yes , I''ll add to this , some one died on the Beach out front 2 hours ago ( BB) , the life savers tried for 40 mins to bring him back, life is fragile, look after yourself , enjoy life and remember ..no one on their death bed ever said" I wished I spent more time at work "..!

Yes what Bazz said, the guy was 30 yrs and broke his neck body surfing and drowned, similar to the young husband father of two young kids who broke his neck surfing Kirra last week, the life guards got to him just in time, sadly he will never walk again and will spend the next 12 months in hospital in Brisbane there is a fund raiser set up,both tragic accidents.

Scary hearing stuff like that, I'm only just over a year behind him in age.

RIP...hope there is something after this life, coz life really is too short even if you live to 80...so maybe rest in peace is the wrong thing to say. Wishing him a great time in the next life, like have a good one in the next life. I guess I'd prefer to say something like that...

Hey Simondo, thats harsh buddy, that would have hit like a brick

Thanks for the reality check its important that we don't get caught up sweating on the little things and being conscious about living a good life.

I've found that we as blokes need to be serious about regular check up's. I admit if i didn't work for a company that made me take a pretty full on medical every two years it probably wouldn't happen and in the last few years there's been a stack of people i work with who have found out about medical issues/conditions that in most cases have been treatable but if left could have been tragic. If they didn't work for us they probably wouldn't have found out until it was too late.

Regular check's gentlemen and don't ignore the weak signals.

One of my best buddies Mum died when we were in high school, she was 45 and SUPER fit and healthy, still playing hockey 3 times a week and no warning just died of a heart attack. That's when i realised it didn't just happen to older folk or unhealthy people.

We have a lot to be grateful for...being upright and breathing, and then a whole heap more for being surfers. Don't let Busy get in the way of Surfing and family because for me that's the gold at the end of the rainbow.

Not wrong.
I'll try to dig up Steve Jobs final words of regret when he was on his death bed. Sad but so true.

I worked near on 30 + years for a large International company and thought I was (kinda) indispensable, but near the end of my time there it dawned on me I was just a number in their eyes..

And so on down days I would answer my mobile calls from head office with .."Hello..424 speaking"..

It was ok until I was reprimanded by the National Manager...but I enjoyed that stoush also.

Make the most of what we enjoy..

Sime - mate I am very sad to read this ..... had a bit of it shadowing me over the past couple of years myself & really it won't matter what I say as nothing will plug the gaping hole these poor souls leave

You can only just do your best to comfort his kin & find the strength to be there for them if need be

Admire you brother for baring your good soul in here - my guess is that he'd be rapt with your gesture .... and pass my deep condolences for his immediate family

Cheers
