Hey guys I'm doing some Home art
and looking for advice from the longroom

this plan is nothing new but its going to have my spin on it.
surfboard fin collage.
im going to use recycled surfboard fins,i would like to repaint them and re coat some with
fabrics and other materials.
im asking for advice or views on how to bond the cloth to the fins and finish coat.
fiberglass resin, epoxy,glue.other
i want a finish like a new fin.

something like this

Great idea mate, you can buy fabric glue which dries clear, then coat it with marine varnish,my two cents.

Weiry ^ maybe once you're finished put a few coats of clear car paint

You can buy it in spray cans.

I'd stick with glass on glass, don't put PVA, car paint etc. in the mix.
Lay the fabric or whatever over, and wet out with resin, but poly or epoxy will dissolve a lot of fabric / print dyes (Ted?)
Squeegee out, maybe microballoons to make sanding easier but might colour it?
Finish each fin by sanding and polishing - heaps of work but will mean the finished product is bulletproof.
As the shape of the fin won't be an issue, you can probably speed up things with a big grinder / polisher, and only do one side of the fin.
If you've got the patience, end result will be brilliant, but lots of work to do it properly.
Maybe you can buy cheap fins from China pre patterned, but that's my economic rationalist side creeping out, and he needs to be kept in check.
Back to my camera.

Just finished work and am absolutely buggered - will give you some thoughts tom Weiry - need to get some rest for the early start. In the meantime hit up swaylocks - do a search re fin inlays and fabric inlays - I spent a few hours hunting this out a few weeks back for a fabric inlay I am planning. Seems if the fabric is 100% cotton its all good. Glass it, hot coat and sand nice and it will be beautiful. So many options and opinions - just use PU as its easy and drys fast and its easier to sand and to get a nicer finish than epoxy - good if you have low patience as well I would glass them if going outside - do the job once and do it right

Grab one of the more banged up fins ya got mate ..... go down the beach and pick up some cuttlefish foams , old wood , shells , coral branches ,

Piece of scrap marine ply shaped into an oval bit smaller than a dinner plate - spray painted whatever colour

Fix the items onto prepped ply with HD adhesive that will allow several coats of spraycan clear laquer after you have laid the beach salvage onto it

spray with laquer at end several times (and hey chuck a bit of sand on before for another touch)
