Would you ever consider riding one, in the right circumstances?

I would.

I often see really good longboarders out on them on crowded days at my local, and when you ask them "why?" they always say the same thing, "stuffed if I'll risk a ding in a good board with all these kooks out"

Yep. For sure..

I have one I got to teach my nephew to ride.

It is good fun to mess around on..

wouldnt ride over a proper board if the surf was decent but small, summer and crowded they are perfect for a bit of fun.

If they are good enough for JOB then they should be good enough for you There are some decent shapes around these days on the shortie version of them not sure about the LB's though - one other good thing is that they allow you to surf legally in and amongst the flags.

i put a few posts up somewhere about foamies...i love them.

the first time i took one out was a bit of a joke, the surf was really crap and i hit reagan up from first wave surf school up if i could borrow one just for a giggle.
well the crew were having a great laugh at me,and so was i. Until i started catching every wave that went through and was laughing like a kid.

Sadly my best ever noseride was on a foamie that day and i finished it with a helicopter the crappy plastic fins made all the difference

i picked a 8ft one up for cheap from the billabong factory,i still havent put normal fins it ,which you can do....

one big problem was the massive amount of rocket rash i got,not on my chest or gut,but right between my legs that was only because i caught so many ****ing waves

oh the funny thing is i surfed reagans one at the neck today and more fun than anyone again

I was water patrol at a junior surf contest on one. When they handed the right foot foamie to me I said I would do a handstand on it. It was expected that the water patrol get some waves over the course of the day, so I did. I did my handstand too. When I came in I got a rollicking for distracting the judges. After 7 years of water patrol duties they never invited me back.

Stay away from them. They are so much fun grown men do strange things that get them in trouble.

The local kids do all sorts of things in tiny waves on the shortboard ones.

I first saw a dad teaching his daughter to surf, she was already standing on the foamie using dad's head for balance - wave comes in dad pushes her onto the face of the wave......funny though, set wave comes through, dad knocks her off, he jumps on paddles out and catches wave of the day.. he did it 3 or 4 times and I thought he has got this fatherhood thing dialled.

after that I went out and got an old Red Back 6' . You end up snapping a few but they are a hoot. Also a lot of self preservation goes out the window as you feel like you can drop in on anything.

haha had to kick off the rocks a few times while gripping tightly to my epoxy board last summer. They're far enough away not to go over the falls into them. Problem is when your tucking into a barrel & not making it the wave washes you into the rocks. I wouldn't have to be as conservative about my wave choice if I didn't have to worry about my board. A foamy would be perfect & it looks like sand build up there is going to be even more than last summer due to the lack of stormy conditions & way too many Northerlies...just South.

Who makes the best ones?

Well I'm not sure if they're all good, but I do know that Surftech, under the banner of Softech had a couple of very big ones that had a remarkable resemblance to my Munoz Ultra Glide. then I read on some sepo site that they actually came out of the same mold.

One weekend a few years back, the reef riders were having a club even at the local point on a really small day and at least 2 of the guys were using this model of foamie in the comp.

If I knew they still made them I would probably consider one.

I teach at a small school for Aboriginal kids in Adelaide and we have amoungst our quiver 2 Gnaraloo softboards, both 8'4" and 94 litres (!) volume. Catch anything. I changed the soft flexi fins for some m7s, the thing is amazing! It has a hard shell on the bottom which makes it rigid- overcoming the main issue with softies feeling like big flexible couches to surf .
I've taken it out up to head high and the thing is a trim machine, it develops so much momentum and just powers through fat sections. Doesn't turn well with the fat unrefined rails so you just highline the waves gaining speed with each climb and drop.
One of the kids loves it so much he's written his name in wax all over it and you've got to tip him off it in the water so another kid can have a ride!

I might of mentioned this on here before but my dads mate was the king of the foamie

He was a real good surfer back in the 60's I think he even won a state title at one stage anyway but by the time me and his son are 14/15 he was on his way to being a full blown alco. So we go away on a surf trip with him and my old man and he brings like maybe 4 or 5 of these little blue foamies, the cloth covered ones with the big plastic fin and we are all pissing ourselves. Anyway we are surfing offshore reefs in NW WA, these things are packing some serious juice, full pitching barrels over live coral right on the edge of the continental shelf. He paddles out and absolutly owns the lineup for the whole trip....barrels, cheater fives not to many turns but just super styling...the only reason he went back to getting on the piss at 7 every morning was he snapped all his boards every time a lip would hit one it was over and he'd go back to teh baot for another...once he ran out of boards he jsut dived into the esky

I reckon, if you take your surfing too seriously, you become a tosser..... I've ridden a couple in Bali and at the Alley when I couldn't take my own and they're just a whole lot of fun.

So here's a clip for those who reckon ya can't have fun on a softie..... If you get one OB, I reckon the other few of the crew might follow suit, but please don't climb on my back, I'm not copping a reach around from the likes of you

Nah, nothing's changed in our relationship and it's not Mick either, I've had him and he's no good, too short for me..... it's my missus actually.... she's the best at a reach around..... wait, I said that out loud didn't I.....

Can you image the line up at the Roy or Lugga with a few of us on 10 foot softies? Farkkin 'ell it would be utter chaos and punch ups in the carpark from mr shortars and his three 14 year old harem boys......

One good thing about them at a crowded Roy is that I won't feel so guilty about running over inside grommies with a foamie
