Hi Guys!

First post. Although I have been browsing for a long time now. I almost feel like I could have a beer with alot of the regulars on here.

Anyway with the recent acquisition of my licence and betsy the toyota. I am now able to finally start surfing. Something that I have wanted/needed to do for almost my whole life. However living in Moreton bay with my beautiful land lubber mother paused those surfing aspirations. But its finally my time!

So its time for my FIRST board.

Is it really worth laying down a months worth of pay, for one of those custon hand made pieces of art? Or would a cheap pop out board do the job, something like a nsp or even ecs.

I assume my first board is going to cop a flogging? Hell I know my first SUP copped a absolutel beating, and that was in the flat. And lets not mention my first kite that I ripped in half.

Any thoughts from the experienced? Beginners, what did you do, happy with your decision, or do you wish you want the other way?

Whats weight n height are ya? No doubt being a young fella you are fit n healthy. Are you wanting a shortboard or a longobard ?

I would say get an NSP,call Travis at Board Culture he will look after you mate.NSP's are built strong and have a good shape for all your current needs, the custom boards will come in time,we all stated on something and an NSP is a big step up from my first board.

I hope this helps and welcome to the hood

Thanks for the friendly welcome guys.

Ted, I'm roughly 90kg and 177cm. The weight is slowly coming down though, with the goal to loose another 10kg. Longboard all the way Ted.

Macaha, Board Culture? Where abouts is he located? I have heard good things about the NSP's. ( Beginner wise)

Am I looking at the wrong thing?

I'm looking at close to a grand on a NSP.

Extra $500 and I'm in the Bennet/McT range. Are these $1500ish board hand shaped?

asea, I'll keep you in mind ;)

Mate its up to you,if monies not of concern go for it but as we have mentioned a second hand board
is all you need, just make sure it has the volume you require.

Yeah Macaha. That would probably be the smartest thing to do.

I'm just put of by not knowing what I need or want. I might put up a thread on here in a couple of weeks, seeking a second handy. A case of beer to whoever finds me a board

talk to a shaper , tell them where you are at, your budget and ask what should i buy

shops will be a good help but may just sell you what you like not what you need

also consider where you will surf most this will make a big diff

Nice find Vanders. This is all you need - probably at the top of the price range I would suggest for yr first board but it is McT

Cheers for the links Vaders.

Whats he mean by comptition or easy riders? Does that mean a light layup/glassing?

Just start with a wide, high volume board. Second hand or a pop out it doesn't matter. Cheap is better as the chances are you will change boards in a few months.

I have been surfing since a real small kid and even now I change boards every 6 months or so as I progress!

Good luck with it and I hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us!

Best advice yet...your not learning on a shorty, you ride a 666 and hang from the sky. Longboards don't really need to be updated that much. It would help if you said what waves you want to surf it in.

Waves? As in small soft point waves, more hollow and punchy beachies.... Or you want a board that will just do a bit of everything.

Chrispy it's his first board - total beginner!!!! Something cheap n nasty will be fine until he works out what he wants to do with his surfing. He may not even know the diff between a soft wave n a hollow wedge!! No need to splash out on a $1400 custom.
