Re: The Bobsled...
I have ridden the Bobsled's "Step-Up" cousin, called
"The Dream Machine" Rincon '68.
This Yellow Board was hand shaped by Bob, for himself. Bob felt is was a fraction long for himself. It now lives with me in Torquay and gets a run at Winki & Bells.
It's 7'10 x 20"1/2 even though it actually says x 21". Even Bob makes mistakes.
I would actually like to give it a go at 21.
Mine is also a Quad - 4 fin.
7'10 = paddles in a dream
Slim though the rear hips means it's a true "Step-Up". Works unreal when it is overhead+
At head high, it's actually a fraction too long. Still goes well when surfed off the tail, but just a little too much board in front of you on smaller days...
When it's bigger, you'll love having 7'10 for paddle in speed. The classic McTavish Chines up front helps to smooth everything out.
The Quad - I found I like the big Merrick fins up front, with either the GXQ in the rear, or the Kelly Quad Rears.
Fin Spread - all fins are a little further forward that you might expect, and all fins are a little further of the rail than you might expect. The result, all four fins are more likely to be up under your back foot, and all fins are now closer to your toes and heel. Result, goes unreal. Very responsive, can allow you to do some snappy turns... Yet the long smooth rail lines allow you to draw beautiful long clean bottom turns. It's 1970's template meets 2010's fins... Quite impressed.
I've ridden plenty of boards, and I like the look of the Bobsled. The fin spread is basically the same as I described above. The template is a little wider. So technically, it will go quite well in waist high and head high waves, to head and a half. If it was head and a half, I would be grabbing my Rincon '68.
I agree with what Bob says below...
http://www.mctavish.com.au/surfboard/bobsledFurther more, if you love The Bobsled, you should get on the phone immediately and ring 02 6685 6736 and ask for a guy called Bob. If he's not there, leave your details and he'll call you back. And have a chat about the dimensions for your new Rincon '68. Helps if you have easy access to some quality point breaks...
