Hey guys,

i have a 9'5 log and it currently has a 7.5" fin. I'm just wondering if this is to short for the board. i was looking at 9" fins today and they look much nicer fit. Also what shapes would be recommended for both nose riding and cruisy turns?

Yes 7.5 is way too small,fins are a real personal thing but something like this 9 or 10 inch.

Oh and whatever you do don't try that stupid D fin Lacey posted the other day.

Fatboys (not pointing fingers ) work well as noseriders..and around 9".

I'm with surf broker! These are always my go to fins. At least 9" as well.
They are one of the best fins for nose riding and if you do get a steep take off, you can get them to side slip down the face.

i will join the ride on this. i find i also get a lot of drive out of mine and it is still very maneuverable . if i use a dolphin type fin now,it is either a very flexy one,or a small one with side bites

I think it will serve you good.

It worked well for the small session I had on it. However there is a little bit of play in the fin (moves side to side in the box) is there anything I can do for this?

Ask her to keep up with her Kegel exercises.

There are things called Fin Shims, they come in little brown envelopes with about 4 thin stripes of black plastic, perhaps 60mm long x 10mm wide. You could wedge these in beside the fin before you nip up the screw, or you could use them to put under the fin to build up between the bottom of the box and the bottom edge of the fin

I don't know where you could get them from, mine were given to me by a shop in Manly many years ago, but I have made them myself in the past, just by cutting up old folders that have semi rigid plastic covers.

Obct is onto it,you may also use the top of an ice cream container simply cut enough to sit under your fin and wrap around the sides inside the box.

Or just use good old sticky tape.

A drink straw works good or just run som gaff tape along the edge of the fin and you won't have to worry about it again.

I isually just find a twig or stick on the ground about as thick as a match and put it between the bottom of the fin and the box.
do it up tight and it should be fine.

Tried to get her to keep using kegel exercises but she is damn stubborn of late. amd that shims and tape sound like winners to me. I will report back with how it goes

masking tape is the best mac and chrispy because when it gets wet it makes the fin tighter.

I've got a 10' Hatchet fin on my 10 foot log. I always thought or heard they would suck at turning, but I don't have a problem with it. A 10 foot boards not going to turn on a dime anyway. Although it pivots really well at slow to medium speed in small waves when your most likely to be on a log. Without getting right on the tail & pivoting it has a slow cruisy turn...has great hold for nose riding too. If you want something with heaps of hold a hatchets great, but a dolphin is probably a better all rounder...never tried one of those fat boys, they look great. Could be the perfect compromise between the two

Have heard 1 inch per foot of board, I think a single 7.5 is too small.

I have a fatboy. Good fin has everything you need, wide base for drive of the bottom, lots of tip area for walking nose ward and the cutaway helps them turn a bit sharper.

Mine was a bit small for the 10ft log so I got the fin next to it in the photo below. It's a jai lee fin from captain.
Much better on the log bit more area and hold.
It's 10.25" and is kinda between a D fin and a dolphin. I'd actually like it a touch bigger.

7.5 is to small.

Dolphin fins are a good place to start the suit most boards in most waves.

Sounds good SP...I'd really like to try one of those new fins with the 3 blades all connected on the one base. Forget its name & just realized my surfing bookmarks folder needs some sub directories, I can't find it in there. But you probably know what I mean. Would have heaps of hold, just wondering if it would benefit turning & effect drag too much.
