Thick foil vs thin foil.

WWhat's the difference in performance and purpose between the two??

Fin experts please come out of hiding

I'm no expert McH but I think a fat fin slows you down and is stiff (steady Hugh Gorgan) so no flex.
Thin foil would have less water resistance and be more flexy aiding turns..

No expert here either, over many years I have surfed both,my younger days on the stiff version pretty much all that was available, think Peterson rabbit ect, even MR twins were very stiff. We all believed in the Aussie rail power surfing thing, mostly singles, until MR came along. If I can recall MPs fins were a 60 layers lay up,no movement there .Then there was the GG 4a movement as well a very different feel, but most thought Knee boards spoons ,mactavish involvement transitional era only.As the decades past,Simons thruster, stiff fins again fcs a big break through game ON enter science ,rather than Baddy, and Fitz hand foiling in bare feet ,and testing.Morning of the earth tragic. Enter the rebirth of cool era performance longboards 2plus1,lots of foil and flex experimentation, some flexy singles as well. Then the hipsters back to stiff pivotal stuff / or GG 4a again ,this rant is more about my journey,to answer the original question totally different feel rider dependant, equipment specific experimentation. I personally love the current times of diversity in surfcraft with all the Knowledge of the past fused with the new approach.Nothing has changed for me,at 66 ,and 50 years of surfing every style of board that has come along,I still love to experiment with fins, and except the confusion that comes with it

It easy. Grab a pice of wire and say a 25 mm piece of dowel and put them through the water.
The wire will be fast but with very little control.
The dowel will be slower but with lots of control.
Thats basically the nuts and bolts of it.

Well yes that makes sense if you are talking about wire and dowel

I disagree with your thin fin description, yes it goes faster for the reason you stated but i dont believe you lose control

On the boards i have surfed with a long thin flexi fin i find i have plenty of control and it just takes a bigger arc to get there. A big bottom turn will hold and then spring you out with a bit more speed and cutbacks are mmmmmmm

granted it will not pivot on the spot like a thick stiff fin,but it was not designed to

Don't go too big with fins. You'll be surprised how good smaller template fins work in longer boards...
