My bride is so excited about me getting rid of all my buggy junk, she's given me permission to buy another sled provided it's under a grand.

My problem is I can't decide on what to buy and my choices are limited because I made a decision over a year ago that I would only ever buy tuflites from now on.

I was seriously considering this Rich Harbour San o

www.seabreeze.com.au/Classifieds/Surfing/~rgotc/Surftech-Longboard-Harbour-San-O-Model-10-0.aspx?search=wJ3EiZgOovkMQ2nlIOgAXA%3d%3d

It's a really nice classic template and a well sorted design, I also like the colour, it reminds me of a dirty big Licorice allsort.

Plus the price is right.

But I decided to give it a miss because I already have a good 10 foot board and I want something different, plus I already have a good 9'6" board.

There was a secondhand Mickey Munzo 10'6" ultra glide at a shop in Bondi that was really different but I was only prepared to pay 900 for that and they weren't interested. There's also a 9'3" model that I could be interested in if I found one at the right price.

This is quite a new experience for me, actually being given permission from the boss to buy a board rather than sneaking around behind her back.

I can't ride a short board, I'd like to think it's because I don't have the ghay

But it's probably because I'm just old fat and useless.

Then again, in my own defense, at least I'm not so ghay or old fat and useless that I ride a SUP

I'm slowly saving my pennies and will buy a new board. Not sure what, but a few possibilities come to mind. This board is not for summer, the 9'3" Fireball will have to do.

It's more for winter swells and easier to transport around for my next trip to the east coast next May/June.
So far the front runners are the 7S superfish (Billboard, I know your thoughts on this one) and the other one is a McT 7'6" Bobsled (62Mac, I can guess your preference), both of these are quads. Anyone got any thoughts on these two or any other possibilities. I want something that a 95kg 55 year old can throw around.

Kind of off topic but not completely: Due to the rather atrocious weather we are having at the moment I decided to head down to Byron today for lunch and a meander along the beach to kill a coupla hours. I also had permission from the missus to call around a few old haunts and catch up with some old mates who are still busting their humps in shaping bays around the town.
What a great day it turned out to be. Dropped into Mccoy and checked out the latest in his nugget range - then onto Brett Munros to talk about a possible custom mal for xmas and finished up at my old place of employ where I picked up a new custom fin for my Dino and talked sh#t with the best glasser and fin maker in the country for over an hour. Best part of it all the missus actually had a good time - suppose cos I shouted lunch and let her sleep whilst I was talking to Munro and Mccoy. She loves coming into Mct though to listen to the old masters and all the stories she has heard a million times - yep- good day out.
Hey obct - buy the bloody Harbour and stop dickin about.

Hey rune - how goes it ?

Mate after my outing today I would suggest you add another option to your dilemna. My first suggestion would be to consider an 8ft ish Munro, based on his performance model longboard. His boards are insane and the quality is first rate and price is way better than other options you may have mentioned. I will actually be testing some 8-8 1/2 ft boards over the next coupla months so I will let you know how it all goes.

Yes that's right, you want me to bring it up to Woopi so you can get your grubby little fingers on it out on the point.

Rune,
It's a no brainer. The Bob Sled ! And go custom !
Board 16344, but 7'6 x 22 x 3. 16393 is nice too, in the right dimensions you were looking for.
http://boards.mctavish.com.au/boards.asp?modelid=35&storeid=1

At your weight, don't stuff around with 2"7/8. McTavish boards at 3, aren't really 3 anyway... the concaves and bevels turns 3 in 2"7/8.

Every 2nd learner seems to be on a 7S, and besides, aren't they made in Thailand ???

The 10-6 Munoz goes pretty good for its length. Its almost a pig shape with its wide point back and plenty of rocker and it turns pretty good as well. You'll catch plenty of waves on it.

Yes, they've got a couple of second hand brewers in a shop in Manly.

When they're on a horizontal rack with other boards above and below, they look really flat. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it's probably a good thing for a guy like me who needs the earliest possible wave entry.

Going through the local rag this morning I was reminded that the annual Manly Festival of Surfing in on again in late november and they always have a demo day.

That may be my chance to have a go on something that looks a bit interesting.

I ride the 11' Munoz a lot and it's great, I have often said if I even had to cull back to just one board then it would be this. Fantastic in small waves but surprisingly fun when it get's bigger.

P co, that's great, finally someone who has ridden one.

How big are are you if it's not too much of a personal question?

BTW, one of the things I was not keen on was the difficulty of carrying it because one of the waves that I think it would work well on is probably a 300 or so metre hike, some of it on soft sand and up a hill on the way back.

Well I think that Harbour is a good price for a secondhand board that's never been surfed although he's a bit over the top as far as his retail estimates are concerned.

he quotes $1600 retail and another $150 for the bag.

My local shop has that exact same board brand new with a $1495 sticker on it and I know for sure that they will always throw in a quality bag and a rope at no additional cost if you pay the sticker price.

Hell, the last board I got from them they reduced it by $100 and I still got all the fruit.

The problem with these tuflites as I see it is that they really probably only cost a few hundred to make, if that, when you take into account the labour costs where they are made. Fair enough they need a lot of additional cost to get them to a market however, you must never forget the cut that should go to the shaper.

They're almost always big names and they deserve to be rewarded for their designs and lending their name to the boards.

But that should only ever be once when the board is first sold, after that, their only reward is knowing that others may see the board, think it's a good'n and go out and buy a new one themselves so the the shaper can be rewarded again.

I think that's why they are always so expensive when they are secondhand, it's as if you must keep rewarding the shaper when in fact the poor bugger gets no direct resale rewards.

obct I had a 10-6 Munoz and had to carry it on my shoulder for longer hauls.
It is awkward to carry but as pco says it goes good in a variety of size waves.
Its a bastard of a board to get caught inside with as well.

Pretty much right on the money mate I am so hoping that the comp is at Mullawarra cos I don't have a board suitable for the point unless of course me ol mate from sydney sorts himself out and turns up with the "San O"

Just an after thought: There is a shop up here that is selling a brand new Johnny Rice Elite Pintail 9'8 for $995 if you are interested - great looking board and would have to be negotiable I reckon.. Its a bit thinner than some of the stuff you have been looking at but with its length and fullish outline it may be another one worth a look. (If I had the money it would already be in my garage)

Hey bro,

The 10' Harbour retails for $1595.00 in 2010.

Not sure what your local is doing at $1495 - maybe 2009 stock ?

Anyhow, board is mine - board is new and never ridden and a steal if someone in longboard land wants a cruiser.

No thats a dished nose concave and the way it turned out. That ones 7-6 x 22 1/4x 2 7/8. Its pretty flat rockered and runs through dead spots really well, you can hang 5 on it and it surfs good off the tail and rarely catches through turns.
My mates 8 footer is 8'x 23 x 3 1/4.

Hi Rune, if you speak to the guy from Whizsticks in Long Jetty he shaped the 7s plug for GSI many years ago. He is still making customs on the same shape but with a 100 times better glass job, even puts some carbon on the swallow tails. I have a mate who has 2. They go well, very skatey and heaps of speed and paddle for an 8ft board. I very nearly got one but went for a 9'1 Munro instead. It should be ready next weekGood luck with the search. Cheers Shane
