I'd sort of say no.... But I know I have contributed to other peoples profits, via paying a little bit too much for that T-Shirt I like, etc. Buying that extra pair of jeans that I really didn't end up liking, and never wore them out! etc... That cheap pair of boardies at the end of summer, that were verging on hideous the following year!

So no, but kind of in hind sight, but it was mostly my own fault, with a small contribution from their clever marketing, cute sales girls, and flashy retail showroom !!

But I make up for it with this... when the sales girl says, "would you like a bag?". Say yes, watch her reach down to pick it out and get a free perve of her boobies!. Then say, "actually it's OK I can save the envirnoment and just carry it to the car". Then you see her boobies again when she puts the bag back !! Genius !

Me, maybe way back,I let this guy talk me into a shortboard which was too short.
I woke up real quick and I had a great relationship with Dukes some 12 years and it got to a stage were I could say, hey I'm ordering a new custom and we would settle on a good trade in on the new one, they know I looked after my boards so there was always something in it for them and I was happy with the deal or I would say nope another 50 or 100 and its a deal.

Quite possibly..... I think?

I must point out however in the interests of my own personal safety that I was simply making a joke about the ripping people off thing. Hahaha.

I haven't, we've bought most of our surfboards through one company and through the same person who has now become a good friend.

There is a difference between a companies making money and being ripped off, they need to eat as well. On that side note I'll point out that Heritage Surf in Manly closed it's doors a week or so ago, and also the McCoy shop just down from the BP station in Manly has also shut. HS is turning into a Patagonia store, and the McCoy shop turned into a bike mechanics

I tend to buy certian stuff from three or four different shops and a tiny bit off the net. I generally get good prices and great service over here anyway

Mate once the word got out,the shop would shut down one way or the other.
I'd call it very bad business, how would they know that you could become the
next good client that returns and spreads the word on how trustworthy and
honest this store is,with your experience Chrispy I would say that place is short
lived.

I bought a 2nd hand board for $600 (with a repaired ding in it), when I could have bought the brand new version for $700. Got home and realised I had been a tight fisted dickhead, so I drove back to the shop to exchange it, but I was too late. The seller of the board (mate of the shop assistant) had already been in and collected his money

I think the biggest rip-off in the surf industry has to be fins. I understand the margins in surfboards being so tight because of the materials required and labour intensive process involved, then you have the cost of packaging and transportation.

A set of mass pop-out fins however should cost nowhere near 200 bucks - whats going on?

Not actually ripped off, but potentially ripped off. When I was looking around for a second hand board to improve on after my initial beginner board, I went around to quite a few shops on the peninsula.

I weigh 90 kilos, aged 52, surfed now for only 20 months - I was offered everything under the sun.

One end of the spectrum "Well mate, you're probably too heavy for any longboard, so why not try SUP?"
At the other end, "Hey, you'll get tired of the longboard soon, so why not try this." pointing to a rather bent old fish.
Other comments were "Just pick anything that looks good on your arm, that way if you don't like it, it's easy to sell on...."

So, whilst there are some really good guys out there who genuinely want you to enjoy your surfing and the culture, there are some who are simply sales guys who could do just as well selling washing machines at Harvey Norman.

My best ever sale was before the cheap Chinese boards when second hand beginner Mini Mals were the equivalent of Golden Rocking Horse poop.

A guy came in in the morning and asked if I would buy his used Mini Mal. I played down the excitement, in the end I arranged him to come back at 3pm with the board and I would 'take a look'

About 30 minutes later somebody else came in and asked if I had any. I said this time instead of the usual 'no, sorry', 'yes, I'll have one this afternoon. Come back about 4'.

So old mate with the board is a little late and arrives at 3:30pm. He's been to the Pawn shop who's offered him $60.00. He tells me this and says he thought that was a bit less than he wanted. I ask politely 'what kind of money were you expecting', he says 'oh about $120', I tell him I think it's worth a little more and give him $150 we are finishing up the paperwork and the buyer from the morning comes in while the seller is still there.

I have to kind of brush the buyer a little and tell them I'll be with them in a minute. I rush the seller out so that the 2 don't catch on.....

Somehow pulled it off. In the end I sold the board for $380 to the buyer and never even got to clean the wax off or fix any dings and they were stoked. I could have sold the board for $420 afterwards regardless.

$230 margin on something you have in stock for 3 minutes. Who ever said profit is a dirty word?
