Once this house reno is all said and done I want to escape the winter for a few days and sit on the beach with the lady.

I am looking for somewhere that is nice but not too expensive to go. I know I could head upto Noosa but that will probably cost an arm and a leg. As some of you know we just did a reno so we are basically broke. Looking for somewhere I could get out for an afternoon surf or two. Don't want to hire a car. Just want to fly somewhere sit on the beach with my lady and chill out.

Any suggestion for the lucky ones who don't have to deal with winter...

How much is yr accom budget?

A mate has a nice place at Byron - easy flight to the Goldie and then $30 for transport down to Byron and then you can walk or ride a pushy everywhere. Warm water and good viewing :)

Mr McHenry,

If you want a cheapish winter holiday away from the Gold Coast high rise and Noosa expense, have a look at Coolum Beach or Peregian Beach.

Fly direct to Sunshine Coast airport, shuttle bus to your accommodation, walk across the road to the beach and you are in heaven.

Both have a range of accommodation, nice beaches that catch swell, good restaurants and caf?s etc

Can't lend you a car, sorry but I cam direct you to good coffee spots.
Mac wins on this one no contest.

I would take mac up on his offer.

We get a bad wrap here but the goldy is a beautiful place. I'm sure between us all over here we could make your stay even better.

Hossegor gets my pick Andymac - love that place Make sure you do not get there before Sept as the Atlantic is pretty flat until then. Also all the crowds leave at the end of August as a general rule so prices for accom drop right off. Water still warmish if you are from Tassie

Good point - I mostly think in SB terms Like anywhere there is lots for both varieties of watercraft - around Hossegor its mainly heaving hollow beachies when they are on but there are aways softer banks just around the corner - well actually just down the beach in this case. Loads of great spots from there all the way through to the Basque country suitable for any water equipment. And you will see lots of different things ! Last time I was there I saw a porsche curising round with a lovely old single fin on its roof - with a big hunk of rope tied around it - for the leg rope. Classic.

Its just a short drive into Spain - some amazing waves, scenery and roads - just beware of the roads in the Basque country - very narrow with steep cliffs down to the water - make sure you stay on your side. A good spot to checkout is the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. If you get lucky and score a session or two at Mundaka you will never forget it. With your longboard you might be able to score a few waves as the tide is coming in without the crowd. Its a mad wave.

The missus & I really enjoyed staying at The Mantra (Coolangatta) on the Gold Coast. You have a great view of the waves wrapping around Greenmount. Snapper Rocks is like 10 mins scenic walk & swell magnet D'Bah another 5 or 10 further on. We found it to be great value with lots of eating options close by, we had a kitchen in our room & there's a BBQ downstairs. Currumbin Sanctuary is just down the road & a fun day out.

Not as warm as say Cairns, but quite pleasant during the day & there's waves. We visited in July
