Any of you chirpy lads of the Beer Garden able to give me a break down of the differences between these shorter boards and a conventional mal? Is there a difference between an egg and a 'mini longboard'? The reason I am leaning towards the shorter boards is due to the easier transport and less space they'd take up. Furthermore it'd be much easier transition back onto my short board. Am looking for something that would pick up the summer ankle slapper reefies on offer in Perth and the odd beach break. Something to get that similar glide and trim you get on a longboard... Actually, the more I type this the more I think I might be better off grabbing a 9 ft'er when I'm back from Bali

Any thoughts? Cheers.

Hi Newguy,

Like all boards there are midlenghts and then there are midlengths. Like you NG, I find the ease of transport a positive of midlenghts along with there versatility.

However, you can have a mid length that is lively off the tail and surfs like a shortboard, in the same length, a different board can offer more of a longboard feel that delivers graceful carves, elegant trimming and noserides. Another midlength again can be a small wave flat rockered board that will offer a different feel again.

It is really what you are looking for. A longboard can offer a similar variety just in a longer length. I have never ridden an egg so can't comment.

Cheers

Hi Newguy,

For a great midlength board I would recomend a Michael Cundith Stubbie. I have one that is 7'2"x23"x3.375". It fits in the car and glides on even those really fat waves. It has a tri plane chine hull that also helps it get up and go. I weigh around 105kg and this board carries me well. Turns easily like a shortboard. They range from 5' to whatever length. But I would keep it around the 7' mark if you are usually a longboarder.

I looked at those boards this time last week and almost brought one....lovely looking things - I was looking at a 6'0" though. Be warned Newguy they are not cheap at $1200 a pop....they look like they would go unreal though.

Hi Ted,

They go very well and fast as. MC is usually negotiable on price, you just need to haggle a bit.

I am very happy with the board.

Thanks for that - good to know. What fin setup are you riding on yours? I love quads so would have gone that way - but with the big fin box there are a multitude of options.

I ride it most with the quad setup. Fast and loose. But every so often I just go singlefin with a 9" fcs for a bit of variety

Mal, that looks an awesome board. Every time I go to Byron Bay MC's shop seems to be closed. I'd love to have a go on something like that. What type of waves do you think it goes best in? What are the rails like? What's the bottom shape like?

Cheers

As for mid length, egg, minimal..... What ever you want to call them there is so many different types.

Maybe put photo of up of why you've looking at.

A nice 7ft ish single fin egg is one of the most fun thing to ride in the right waves but they are a bit one dimensional and struggle in some conditions. But even the term egg covers a fair few different board type, Southcoast longboards always had some nice mid lengths as are the Taks if you want an egg and so does black apache, but a lot of older local board builders make pretty nice single fins, they grew up with them so maybe talk to someone local about what you should get...

Malrider, that is one great looking stick and probably something I am looking at. Just need something that would handle the fast beachie closeouts of my local while able to be used on the reefs. The moolah, will be saved so I can get something decent instead of a cheap pop out!

Cheers SP, that is probably the range I will be looking at and whom I will probably give a ring to. I am definately after that single fin ride; I guess something for the lazy day

Daneli,

MC has a 7'2" demo board in the shop exactly the same dimensions as mine. The board is good in just about everything. I took the demo out at Wategos on a particularly fat day and it still handled. I have had mine out in the sucky beachies too and have not been dissapointed.

MC will open on a saturday if you call them. Speak to his wife, Toshie.

My brother picked up a 7'2 Takayama Egg. Good board but at 21 1/4" wide it doesn't really fit my idea of an egg.

newguy, i would go a fish mate. paddle my one pretty well for a old broken human.
i did not like my egg once the novelty wore off. i will say in fat waves it was heaps of fun. could trim, easy cheater 5's and you could turn it. then again my hp longboard is heaps more fun,as in it turns unreal(i said unreal) and to me,i will surf a lb when needed and my fish for when needed. or even better when it is sucky and closing out,i grab my fins and hand plane

I've ridden a 7 10' Tak egg tuff lite and it went well. They're doing Scorpions in tuff lite now as well. Glass is better though.
