Had my second surf on the longboard yesterday still absolutely stoked with the feeling of riding it . Finding it a bit strange not being able to duck dive with it . Wondering in bigger surf with the longboard to you all turtle roll .I have been doing the old push up and let the wave pass between me and the board . Or with a bit of effort are you able to duck dive the longboards .

Turtle roll for big surf, push up and wave go through for little surf, dont duck dive LB you will put big compression dents in surface

thats because you only surf points - any board would do that there

Turtle roll anything more than 1/2 foot of whitewash, push up anything under (1/2')

Use everything.... Paddling a LB in decent surf that you have to get through sucks balls..

If its rolling whitewater,
the old clubby lift the nose trick works good. Or if it's tiny just kinda sink your nose and let the whitewater pass between your board and body. If neither of these will work than you only have roll or dive.. The clubby pop over is Good, cause you can recover quick and start paddling, rolling is **** cause you have no forward moment to get going again.

If it breaks right in front of you, your only option is roll or bail. If you roll hold on, the whitwater will push your board down and most likely into your head, if i have to roll i always just try to grab my nose about a foot back, wrap my arms around, then either hang vertically down, trying to use yourself as a brake or If its too big dont do this just stay flat on your board, if it's really bad wrap your legs around the board when you roll. Rolling is my last resort i hate it.

if you bail take a big breath and get ready to the ride. You can actually kinda dive off from the board to get deeper but sometimes that just means your legiie will pull harder and drag you more

Other than that if the lip is capping paddle as hard as you can and try to duck the nose under, you can either push it through duckdive style or roll.

And if your going to roll paddle as hard as you can at the whitewater before rolling.

Thanks for the tips . CMC / SP what is the cubby bounce /Pop over haven't heard of that one . Don't mind the McTavish boards Mac was eyeing off a UFO before I grabbed my old Glen Darcy board . Might still grab one in a couple of months . What types have you got .

Have to decide between a new board or a heated wet suit . tough choice

Watch how the clubbies paddle out, masters of getting boards out through waves. Get some speed and right before the wave sit up and lift the nose up and then time it so you lie back down
to the nose as the wave hits. You literally go straight over it and it takes no getting back on or whatever. It's easier on a Mal. I do it on My 666 all of the time, and also when I ride a Mal.

I spent a bit of time on the surf rescue boards last summer . Whenever the surf was too small for my fish I could grab a rescue board out from the clubhouse and have a play . Bastards of things to steer on a wave . I never thought of using the same technique on the Mal . Should work well .
Still like the look of the UFO Mac .what breed of McTavish board is a slice ?
