So guys,

Driving up to town tonight, I was in the car with three other girls, all very good friends, and I nearly crashed.

I was on the main highway when I drifted to the other side of the road without noticing, if it weren't for one of the girls grabbing my attention by calling my name, we would have gone up the embankment and flipped and likely all died.

A real eye opener for me and I am truly shattered. Just the thought of what could have happened is so scary. Luckily I didn't kill us all.

Does anyone have any tips for driving long distance? We had the music up full volume, an they are the loudest girls in the world!

Well If I had 3 chickys in the car I'd be performing regular pitstops along the way .... break up the monotomy of driving dunno ask the Prez Asea he'd know the answer to this cunnynundrum

I am sure your stops would only take a few seconds

Turn the music down, so you can concentrate.

Tell the girls to lighten up. So you can concentrate.

Take regular breaks and have a drink and something to eat, so you can concentrate.

Make sure you concentrate on what you are doing. You may have killed yourself and your passengers and maybe someone coming the other way as well.

Start to take your driving seriously because if you don't you could be dead.

Sorry TC don't want to sound nasty but too many people are dead because they don't pay enough attention to what they are doing. They joke with friends, listen to loud music, dance around in their seats etc etc.

Driving is serious and it needs to be taken seriously.

Funny thing is though. I did not speak more than a few words here and there the whole way, an I was in no way engage in conversations. I just don't know how I lost concentration.

If it took one of the 3 wheelers to bring to your attention you were heading off course then you weren't concentrating.

I think I got to that point of just staring at the road. Vagued out a bit. Quite stressed with school at the moment too so I think there is a good chance I was thinking of that and not where I was on the road.

Thats it though I think, need to be constantly thinking of driving, not just driving and thinking of other stuff.

Honestly grateful for every second that I can breathe, every letter I can type but more so grateful that I didn't hurt anyone else.

Mate, I reckon you should actively engage in the conversation, while still paying attention to the road. Keeps your brain active on a level that feeds back into staying safe.
We have all done it (gone close to something really serious), and some of us grew up pre-RBT and did it while imbibing and maybe even having a toke. Don't be too hard on yourself. Your story had a happy ending. Live (important) and learn (kinda important).

Fatigue/tiredness possibly young grommet? Had you had a big day?

Was it farkin Rap music, that crap is responsible for a lot of problems in the world...seriously mate, being from WA & done the Nullabor twice I'm no stranger from a long drive. Get yourself some good 90's alternative hard driving guitar music. Should help keep ya focused...hasn't been much decent rev u up music the last decade or so, I feel sorry for u young blokes singing that rap crap like fricken retarded white merican trailer trash. Will brain damage anyone...

Agreed mate. Want rap, all their girly songs along with a few Melbourne DJs. Nothing I really listened so I guess I wasn't paying much attention to it.

Jeepers. Frightening reading. Make sure if you are tired you do not drive its just not worth it. Good to see that you are attempting to address this issue and find a solution rather than let it play out. I like your style. Nothing wrong with asking for advice - its a great skill to have.

Drive faster. You'll be on the road for a shorter time reducing the risk of an accident. .

Good tip is have the window down.

My tip... in addition to above.
Some of us blokes can only concentrate on 1 thing at a time...
You might need to zone out from the distractions inside the car, and focus on your job, driving the car.

As per above, you were probably distracted. The other possibility is that you had a "micro-sleep". Or similarly, "micro-brainfade".

If I'm doing long distances, on a 2x2 road (2 lanes each way)... I'll just sit in the left, doing 95km/hr (in a 100 zone), on cruise control.
You can just concentrate on holding your lane, and distance from car in front... It's doesn't take much brain power that way!

The crux of the problem was probably 3 separate navigation systems...
