So the kids drag me off to the games room at the holiday park we are staying at.
I was reluctant as I'm not into modern day arcade games.
Anyway, we enter the games room and my eyes light up as I see the words 'GALAGA' above one of the games. The last time I played would be Circa 87.
Now, I'm not one to brag but just quietly I just happened to be pretty damn good at Galaga in my day. Naturally, the kids hadn't heard of Galaga.
First game I clocked up 53,000 and highest score (previous highest score was 24,000 pft).
The next day I returned and punched out 122,000 and thought it was time to retire gracefully (until next year).
As we are walking away my son says "Dad, you're so cool".
My reply "son, it's just like riding a bike".
Son has confused look on face.

misspent youth Tux?

Well done Scotty - you rock !

I liked Elevator and 1942. I downloaded a 1942 game a while back and enjoyed it for a bit - especially the music! Then I started to look at buying a cocktail video game so I could play all the old games - then the geeks at work started talking about the Raspberry Pis and it got me thinking that I was going down the wrong route. So now I am doing a variation of this.

If you want to set yourself up with the old games then I suggest you look at this approach - very cheap way to do it

haha nice story Scotty.....I loved all those games & The Haunted House pinnie. My Uncle fixes dukebox machines now, but back in the day when Timezone gaming arcades were still around he used to repair gaming machines. I loved visiting his house to see what game he had at that time. I'd sit eagerly watching him de-solder electrical components on the machines motherboard & replacing them. Then playing the game when he finished repairing it. He still has a room off the side of his living room with a pinnie & about 8 standup arcade machines. Its been so long since I visited I forget what games he has, but I remember he has Galaga & Arkanoid. I think the pinnie is The Mummy.

You could buy these machines real cheap at the end of the 80's, early 90's. Especially Pinnies...I remember seeing them advertised for $300 - $1000. I saw Gauntlet which was a huge machine that could have 4 players playing simultaneously going for $2000. I almost bought Defender for $200, kicking myself now coz its one of the original's & probably worth heaps today. Had some awesome sound effects, probably even had a valve amp inside

Don't they.... I busted my shoulder with my mates 9 year old and he is giving it to me....

But reminds me of dad... I was about the same age as your young bloke and remember shopping for a fishing knife... We were in the shop and he was all shaving his arm with it and giving me tips on knife safety...
Then he ran it across his finger and nearly cut the bastard off, farking hilarious, I still bring it up every time I get a chance..

But good thing is your kid will always remember you were good at something, I just think of my old man as not able to handle knives...
