Any ideas..

Has to be freestanding, no holes in the wall. I rent.
Hold 4 boards vertically. I have high ceilings.
It is also between 2 walls about 1500mm apart

My simple idea is to get a piece of timber just narrower than the gap and screw two bolts into the ends of the timber with feet on the bolt head end, then just wind the bolts out till the are tight against the walls.

I would just put dowels in it to hold the boards. So will it stuff my walls?

Will it lean against the wall then? You would want to make sure you brace it I imagine. You could put some old foam or carpet on the edges that touch or potentially touch the wall.

Doggie posted a pic once of his storage solution - he lies his boards on the ground - one on top of the other with foam blocks separating them. With your boards this may not work as you would need a really long room! Also I think it would be a hassle getting them out - but probably something that can be overcome.

Yeah it would be wedged between the walls, the bolts are so I can adjust it so it fits snug. Good idea with the carpet.

Was going to do something like this www.epicsurfracks.com/?_route_=Racks/Surfboard-Racks-Home-Retail-Trade-Shows/vertical-self-standing-racks-surfboards

but wondered if the other idea would work, might try it anyway, I have a scrap bit of timber and some bolts around here somewhere.

It would pretty much be the cross brace on the above racks that holds the boards with bolts in the end that I can screw out against the wall either side.

Like below but the timber would be horizontal

.

The idea is kinda like this..

I'd be getting myself some pine as large as you like and put that between the bolt heads and wall with maybe some 2-3mm plate so the heads don't bury into the pine (or harder material) the more surface area against the wall itself the less damage if any at all

Yep, going to use some formworkers Ply about 20mm thick and probably cut into a square about a foot by a foot. And the back is against another wall so it will be wedged between the two sides and pushed against the back wall.

Look at www.surfnrak.com.au

I have the free standing rack that holds three boards horizontally. I had it made for three logs but it could be made for four.

Thank for the link I had a look the other day, they look perfect....but i need them to rack vertically and my boards are longer than 1.5metres long so don't think that will work in the space I have.

Looks like the original idea will work, just got to put the dowels in.

Total cost so far less than $20, just need a spade bit that fits the dowels then I'm done, taken me less than an hour.

Should I cover it in some kinda foam? The boards will be in covers most of the time

Lacey not sure if you read my fin post yesterday but spoke with a little man from nsw's and he explained the redline v hatch fin, hence the redline is now in place.
