How long after pick up of a custom shape do you wait before surfing it?

I say custom as I assume off the rack boards generally have a bunch of time between manufacture and play purchase.

A week if its been pushed through production

You never surf yours green

At mct it mainly takes a least a week to do the filler sand and polish so they are ready to rock n roll

Yes, 1 week is the common for the majority of folk, apart from Mac, he need to start riding them the very second they leave the production line Because on day one he rides it, on day two he sells it

depends if its been glassed using solar cure resin, if so straight away as they put em in a baking machine to cure and get them to full strength,glassed the traditional way you should wait 2 weeks to fully cure-torture!!!

Where did you get the two weeks number from?

All the glassers I know say by the time as mac says, it s gone past the filler coat and you get it in your hands it is right to go.....

I also know a boat builder and said the longer it sits is a old wives tale

Thanks guys. It all reinforced my world view for the most part, but wanted to check with the brains trust.

My 9'6" was ready for pick up on Tuesday. Similar to the McTavish factory it would have been a week since the glassing was finished before the filler and polish. I get home on Sunday so will pick the board up on Monday. Tuesday is looking like reasonably solid so I was umming and aahing about taking it out. Not so now. It's getting wet.

I always thought 3 days..

But this is interesting.

my excuse is I'm to cheap to get them polished. glass, wet sand, surf.

back in the day I had some boards ready where I was warned they were green and leave them for a week.

guess what- big depressions all over the deck-doh

Usually surf them asap...I like a bit of deck compression on a light SB. Wouldn't expect it on a LB & would normally be unlikely I'd get a custom LB. But that was before I rode a Boyd Purdy, I'll ask him to shape me a board like my mates one day & then I'll probably let it cure for a week after glassing.

a shaper was telling me some of his team riders would put their board on the grass and stomp the tail to their back foot.

hahaha...I'm a big fan of deck compression too, but yeah I have sold very few boards in my life. Sold way more in the last 5 than the previous 30 odd. Can't imagine it would add much value. Havta say boards don't seem to compress as much as when I was in my 20's...I know blokes like tux would say its the blank, Drip would say I've become weak & me well I'd say probably both

My oath - I think you are too busy trying to conserve your energy and make that five hours to put any power through that back foot.

A week or two depending on the weather. It's hard when you've got a newie just sitting there waiting. Popouts can be used straight out of the box.

Yeah two weeks was always recommended to fully cure and get full-strength although that was the standard back in the good old days,my brother glassed boards in brooky long time ago,not sure if anythings changed since then for standard rack glassed and cured custom boards,although my last Rusty came out of a baking oven ready to go ,no cure time,but Im talking open air glassing and curing and that was the norm told to me,plus on newly glassed boards you can smell resin for a while after to me that says its still curing-Ive been wrong before and would be interested to hear from a reputable glasser.By the way Chrispy Ill be heading to Currumbin after Xmas if you want to pass on the SDR Beer project board,if no takers Ill hang on to it,its a great board

Its a chemical reaction. Nothing to worry about as long as the person mixing things up and glassing knows what they are doing. By the time you get it all the goodness should be done. Your main concern is most probably the quality of the blank and the blowing process.

As for Mac - does not matter as OB said

I Picked up a freshly made board rode it in 5 days and wished i didn't, was still a little soft. If i had of waited the extra couple 'a days!!!
That was in the tropics too so humidity may or may not have played a part in slower curing.???

Epoxy definitely hardens up significantly over a couple of weeks if glassed in cool temperatures.

Epoxy takes longer in warm weather as well
