Was gonna give some local/interclub comps a crack this year, anyone got any pointers to maxamise the success and fun side of it? Obviously surfing as well as you can is a no brainer.

Be as fit as possible, Im training my ass of for my club comps this year!

In the past my fitness is the thing that let me down, and when you lose by .5 cos you couldnt get that last score sucks big time.

In saying that I will be in peak form for R3

I always find a Bundy and Coke 10 mins before I paddle out relaxes me,only problem is
after making it to the final they have to wake me up from sleeping under a tree.

I hear ya Doggie, I am definately fitter than last year. Have been doing a lot more muscle endurance work and added on a bit of extra muscle. Can surf for longer than ever now. Have recently had tendon issues in my elbows from overdoing it but seems okay now. Fingers crossed.

Having not surfed a whole lot of places these comps are good cos I get to surf new breaks and with only 6 out at a time which is even better. LB comps seem a lot more mellow as well which keeps the fun factor higher than the whole competitive aggro that can ruin it if you are not dead set on having to win.

Mac the bundy is a no go, I get a big energy burst then crash. Too much sugar ha ha. I once skulled 2 OP cans and paddled out ha ha lucky it was small surf is all I have to say. Did it as a dare.

Yea we have had a few there, we go to Yalls 5 times a year Rotto once, Denmark once, but when local we try and stay in Scarbs Trigg area.

We have had two comps in Bali where we have bought out the breaks for the day.

If you see us come up and say hi they call me Barbs around the traps

Wow thats a nice broad range of spots for comps, a bali set up to yourself is a once in a lifetime thing.

Will come and say G'day If I see the flag.

Went in my first comp last year with BB.

Not taking the comp too seriously worked wonders for me.
Had the jitters a bit on my first paddle out until i started chatting w the others out there. most were there for the same reason. To have a good time.
once i found that out i started loosening up and surfing better

Mind you i have never been the most competetive person.

fun b4 winning for Tomayama

Joined the Manly club last year and was able to fit in one comp and this years season starts Sunday - I'm there for the snags and beer

I take it pretty relaxed, want to do well but the reason I do the comp is to become better and push my surfing a little. If every month I push a little harder or get the floater/nose ride what ever then I'm happy. If I crack B Grade or do really well in C Grade I'll be stoked.

I was in a longboard club for a few years but the problem was the president and a couple of other hangers on used to want to surf in the smallest conditions and a lot of it seemed to be about a couple of guys who always wanted to win.
I guess there are a few of these guys in every boardriders club.
I used to try and surf as best I could but used to get a bit nervous and stuff a few waves up. I liked to social side of it a lot though and was always there for the BBQ and the raffle.

that's probably the thing I dislike most about comps of any kind, the wankers who just always seem to take it far too seriously.

The buggies were the same, there was always one or two nobs that would think they were Mark Weber.

Years ago I really enjoyed a game of tennis of a Wednesday night, same deal there. Always someone who wanted to blast you off the court. I had one mate who would do everything he could to aim the ball at your body and try to hurt you so that you would lose.

Off the court, he was the salt of the earth but as soon as you got on the court all he wanted to do was kill anyone who got in his way.

That's why I love surfing so much, you can just go down to the beach on your Pat Malone, you don't necessarily need anyone else, it's just you, your board and the wave.

I don't even engage the locals all that much, they're a nice bunch of guys and gals but most are part of the local club and I ain't no joiner.

Apart from that, it's really tiring if I get to know someone well to have to keep paddling over to them when they talk to me to hear what they're saying so I don't seem like I'm being rude.

On Sydney's norther beaches ?

I know what you mean. Too much chit chat means you can't concentrate on catching waves. Its best to have the socialising in the carpark.

funny you should mention that doggie, regardless of the fact that I'm not a clubby type. I really like to see familiar faces out in the line up.

I guess it's just got a lot to do with that very human trait of wanting in some small way to be part of a tribe.
