Good mid length surfing.

Watched this yesterday, guy had wicked style super flowy. The type of surfing that is nice to watch.

I think it's a bit of LB style / technique coming through?

And yeah maybe it is a bit over volumed but it is a mid so hard to get all the volume out of them and who wants too, that is why they are fun to ride..

I love love love that video...so much that I am going out to buy some blanks to make myself a 7'6 or a 7'4 or a 7'2 egg...maybe like 2 1/4 x 22...

Really enjoyed that SP. That board looks like an 8 footer and he makes it sing. Nice waves too.

Having another look the board might be a bit shorter. I reckon anything would go good in waves like that.

He must be a little bloke because it looks big under his feet. Don't know why there is fuss about mid length boards. I always had a few and loved them.

I agree. my new one is the most fun board I have surfed over the most conditions his board did look over volumed though... I do love that smooth style of surfing,just so nice to watch

^+1 good surfer & great waves. But I guess its a little fat & maybe a shifty peak, so the extra volume might help him paddle over to where he needs to be. I have a space in my quiver for one of those boards

Those waves looked just about perfect to me - except he had a wetsuit on. I dream of sessions like that. I have not had enough of them in the last 12 months.

In terms of his surfing - its fair to say he surfs really good. Think he was hoping he was on a shortboard a few times and then at other times he showed some nice longboard style. Perhaps that sums up the joy of the mid-length. I wish Chrispys single fin was a touch thicker and I would buy it.

In terms of the board it self - its the old fashioned widowmaker. Some good stuff on the history of those floating around

In the first clip i don't think he is trying to or wants it to surf top to bottom. If he did he would be on a SB.
Its also made by Tyler Hatz so i guess it is a bit old school.

My point was simply the bloke comes from a logging background, so his technique, equipment and enjoyment on a wave would be based on riding a LB.
His board are a cut down on that, not a blow up from a SB background.

And my thought is that riding and turning a log is completely different to riding a shortboard and this has carried through to him riding a mid as well. Not like he is going top to bottom on a log to have that as his go to plan when he drops length.

To properly surf a log youre taking a different line on the wave and You're feet are in a different position to that on a SB, Think about a good drop knee cutback , where his feet are and what happens to his knees and body position.

It is a completely different turn to a shortboarder, that is squared off feet across the stringer line.

The bloke has been around ages and has never wanted to or tried to surf like a SB rider. So don't know why people are judging him on a SB criteria or style.

But hey i'll let Roy handle the what is good surfing Q in his thread.

i agree completely mate. i was just answering what i thought was a volume question. but he would have been better doing a nice rail carve than what looked like a poor top turn....... as i said i love that style of surfing. so just smooth and nice to watch. makes it look easy....but its not all easy to say when your kook behind a computer
