The last two times I surfed, I got out was cold but fine. Then at about 8pm I get the chills and shake for 2 hours. Anyone else have this?

I'm no doctor McHenry but it sounds like you have a chill in your bones,is your wetsuit warm enough

The bad news is the rash will followThe only way to cure this is drink more coffee and stand in
the sun in the carpark drinking itStay well clear of anyone infected with the 666 disease for 2 weeks
and all should be good.

I get it sometimes, maybe not that long after a surf, but it can last a long time, no matter how much warm gear I put on.

It's probably because I have the warm gear on that it's happening because when you're skin or extremities are cold, like in the surf, your bodies natural defense is to reduce the blood flow to your skin in order to protect your vital internal organs. Once your skin and extremities become warmer, the opposite happens and more blood flows to those areas, that may be why I/we feel a chill.

Thanks for the advice guys, particularly obct. Mac I will try and stand in the car park and drink coffee. I wear a ripcurl3/2 ebomb. No booties or hood. I'm not too cold in the water. Last about hour And a half. Get out when my feet are numb. Now my lady issayingyou can't go in the winter this happens every time. The shakes are bad, like I can't get my mobile phone I'm shaking so much.

I wonder if warming up slowly would make a difference not getting super bundled up after getting out.

I think your on the money obct. Went surfing with Asea a few weeks back, raining and blowing a hell cold offshore. Was cold out there but very bearable. Was pretty cold all day after that. That night though I was even colder and got the shakes more than when we got out. Had trackies, hoodie and doona over me and the Girl thought I had lost it,Asea was the same he told me later. Dr Obct

Maybe warming up you insides with a nice hot soup like I just had after a surf at queeny would help.

They were last nights left overs, the missus usually does the soup and I usually don't like them that much, so I did my own last night and loved it.

The base was Pumpkin that I pureed with some chicken stock. Then I cooked up some diced Parsnips & Kumara, I already had some soup mix seeds soaking overnight.

I cooked some diced onions until they were translucent, then I added the Parsnips and Kumara that I had started to cook in the microwave, along with what I think was the secret ingredient, one whole long red chili that I had taken the skin off, removed the seeds and veins and chopped up finely before cooking it with the rest.

Then in went the pureed pumpkin along with the rest of the chicken stock, some salt and black pepper, and that was it, a soup with a nice bit of an edge to it rather than just bland pumpkin.

If only I had some garlic cloves, I would have roasted them up a bit and added that.

How's that for a thread hijack, from chilled bones to soup in 6 easy posts.

Suffered the same once last winter . Really cold wind blowing , was fine in the water but hypothermia kicked in on the walk back to the car in the wind . not my favourite experience

Cure - cover your extremities - gloves , booties , hood

- layer up 3-2 steamers are fine if you layer up , vest under / and over on cold days . If still cold grab a heated vest I wear mine as a vest and if I start to feel the cold hit the heater button - great invention .maintains your core temp .

My wifes cousin is the ripcurl rep. He was telling me there heated steamers are a game changer. He was telling me he was surfing at bells for 5 days in a 4/3, booties, hood and was lasting about 2 hours. he then used a 2mm heated steamer no booties, hood and said he was hot. I think its worth the dosh.

He's right McHenry , on the hot setting I do get too hot , only use it if I get really cold and then only for a short time .

Still find even with the heated vest on I need gloves and booties and some sort of head covering or end up with aching toes / fingers and ears , even though body temp is hot .

Getting old and soft

Yeah I think SA is cold vic and tassie are worse. Its weird how I dont think the water is that cold but it must be how long you spend in the water that does it to you. Lowers your core body temp.

You should put a winter surf in Tassie on your bucket list

Crystal clear water , not another human in sight

3 hour surf on Saturday , spotted one lady walking a dog and one 4 WD collecting firewood .

Yeah, those tassie boys are tough as nails, but I reckon these great lakes surfers take the prize for the most determination to get a wave, no matter what the conditions.

Can you imagine how much harder the paddle would be, not just because of lower bouancy, but the weight of the wetty and all that ice hanging off you.

Our water temp is sitting at 13 degrees right now. Those guys would definately be getting the chills after surfing.

I have surfed a few times with snow on the hill and an offshore blowing - very very cold. The coldest I have been is in Southern Chile - 7 degrees it was and I thought I would die. Somehow I survived. These days even the thought of it scares the hell out of me Thats why I never head back to NZ in winter even though I know the surf will be pumping!

Full respect to TD and TB and you Queenslanders are soft

Its obviously to do with blood flow. Could it help to try and get the heart pumping a bit more

A bit of a jog on the spot maybe

Its a balmy 13 degress in the water here at the moment...get some booties and a hood bro....I can go for a about 3 hours mid winter down here with head gear, booties and a 4/3....plus I jump in the heated spa when I get home and I'm golden...a hot shower is usually good as well....

I have just ordered a hood as well. Will look like a condom in the water next time I go out!!!

At least I wont be violently shaking on the couch with a grumpy wife beside me.

Tux,

You have obviously not met my wife. She will make most grown men cry. Not the type of girl that takes any sort of talk back.
