I know the old saying "You get what you pay for" and I'm sure its applicable to surfboards.. BUT!

I've been on and off hunting around for my first board. I have no interest in short boards and that style of surfing, so I naturally started looking at longboards. And much to my amusement it looks I've picked the more expensive side of surfing.

I figured I'd buy a board from a store as I seem to have a habit of spending money on second hand beat up junk. I've read that I should stay away from the eBay boards as there not much chop either.

Now to my question. The Surfboard Warehouse, yay or nay? Are they selling the equivalent of the eBay dungers? This is the board I'm contemplating.

Don't be scared of boards sold on ebay, just take someone along who knows the difference between a good, average or crap board.

If your just starting out I see no real problem buying a cheap board to get you going.

Those boards on the link are cheap so why not give them a call.

Saw a listing for a Rabidge fish, awesome condition except for a FCS plug ripped out. Sold for $50.

Some good things on eBay if you keep an eye out.

You can get a good second handy pretty cheap. Mine was a bargain for $200 including a board bag...But for $590 new, that 9' zebra performance log looks pretty cool.

As a first board, just grab almost any 9 foot + Surftech Malibu.

Going rate is about $450 through $650 depending on condition. Maybe up to $750... Of course if it is mint condition, and you have the right buyer, you might get $800++

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/91-T-C-Surftech-Longboard-Surfboard-/121062188941?pt=AU_Sport_Surfing&hash=item1c2fde678d&_uhb=1#ht_647wt_940

Benefits of Surftech, are lightweight and strong. Great for learning on, because you get the opportunity to smash it into things without dinging it up!!... Wet hands, drop it onto the road... wind catches it, flips, hits a fence post... leave it in the sun, no delamination... Bring it inside, smash the tail into a brick wall, door frame, door, etc... Eventually you will understand how to handle a Longboard!! But you can make all these errors and just lose a coat of paint with a Surftech, and touch-up the paint with some nail polish!!

After 1 year, you should be ready for a real board!!
Something like an EvoII with tints...

I don't actually know anyone that surfs, so I'm relying on my bad instincts to pick a board.

I was more referring to these eBay boards.

I might start hunting Ebay and Gumtree for second hands though now. I'll just have to read up on what to look for condition wise.

Man oh man those mcT boards look nice

You longboard lads are much nicer then those neo-Nazi shortboarders

$420 for a Chinese 9'0 surfboard... so cheap...

Wait for CMC to post!

As a learner board, you will probably do OK with that thing... But you don't have certainty on design, or weight... will it work... is it too heavy...

Probably better off with a Surftech... Proven designs, with proven light-weight...

eBay: my 2 cents... Good if someone is selling a genuine proven product... no so good in terms of "rip-offs"... rip off sunnies, rip off boardies, and rip off surfboards... This surfboard falls into the rip off category!! But you never know, it "might"(?) be ok...

SuperPoop, are you Goldie, Brissie, or Sunny Coast? There are a stack of people on here to help you out, in person... Also go and ask questions at surf shops...

Give us your locality, and we can point you to a good surf shop...

For example, you would talk to Watto who runs Beach without sand in Avalon, Sydney Northern Beaches... You talk to Nathan or Speaky (his dad) who run Speaky's in Geelong... These blokes can ski too! Off piste!

Surfboards in Brissy Malls should be avoided, in general!!
But I'm sure there are some awesome surf shops in metro brissy... equal to Zack's in Metro Melbourne...

Disclaimer - I tried to visit Zack on a rainy winter Sunday... wife's in-laws live close by... he was shut... Have never met him, or even been inside his store... But what I could see through the window... it looked very good! Plus a bunch of local Torquay coast shapers, they shape boards for Zack...

I'm on the North side of Brisbane. Right in the middle of both the Sunshine and Gold Coast.

I've got Primitive Surf about 20 minutes up the road from me. But I've never actually been In there, so I'm unsure what its likes.

I've considered this though I'm not sure on exact stats

Just go for a 9'0 range board to start with... Maybe get an 8'0 also... You will soon realise you like the 9'0 better!

I know I'm chucking all sorts of boards out there..

But what are the NSP boards like? Yay or Nay? It appears my local (primitive) stocks these boards, and they appear to be on the cheaper side I.e. under $1000

Worth the drive IMHO.

(But the NSP would be a tougher build, i believe.) Good luck, Superpoop.

Poop, there are plenty of second hand good quality boards out there, but for a 90kg body weight, make sure you till have a bit of volume.

That means, over 9 feet, plus some width and thickness of at least three inches. Some boards, like Celarwater, but Stve Del Rosso and Diverse, buty Dave Verral include volumetric measurements, which help immensely with float, which is what you need if you're new to paddling a longboard.

Worth checking out Diverse in Tugun, they have some great high volume boards in stock second hand. As do Board Culture, and if you get in touch with Mac, he'll take you in and screw a price for you. Chrispy could intro you to SDR if you want something made, but above all, go for volume.

I manage to pick up a Diverse from a guy in Newcastle with a leash and Balin expandable travel bag for $450. 10'1" x 23.5 x 3.5 with 94 Litre volume, and it paddles like a canoe, easy wave catcher and would be a great nose rider, if I actually knew how to nose ride

Keep looking.
