Back in the day I used to travel on the hunt for a wave but don't bother much anymore, if there are no waves on the coast I don't travel cant be bothered with that anymore.

Question how far do you travel in search of a wave?

Grom good one mate I got dropped off at a bus stop a 5am to catch the Skinners bus down the coast,surf all day grab KFC for the 6 pm bus back home at the age of 11.Best days of my life.

i've changed the way I do it. Where I used to speed hours driving round checking different spots...i now can do this all with Technology.
Wind, swell and tide info is all available...then use the cams and target the best spots, usually the night before and drive there first thing.
If its pumping i'll keep an eye on it at work and bugger of abit early for an arvo surf.

i did also used to go for 3-4 day weekend trips 5 or 6 times a year....these are now more in line with school Holidays and maybe 2 a year.

i would then do at least 1 overseas trip......so yes i believe i still chase but as you get older you have more options money wise and maybe less time than when you were a grom.

Back in the day had a wind vane on my house , soon as it swung SE offshore , down to the view point then decide where to head , had many reef breaks to choose from in a 30 k drive around the mountain ... now days its the web cam, but due to traffic & parking plus crowds can't really be bothered just do the Beach out the front ...& drive to ..down south ...won't name it ...occasionally which is Long board mecca for me .

funny you mention the wind vain...i still use my neighbours whirly bird to judge wind speed when i'm making my morning coffee....i even got on his roof a while back when a stick got jammed in it as its a very good wind indicator and it was killing me seeing it stationary!

I LOVE the chase... for me "The Chase" is surfing...

I love reading the weather reports.
I love scoring the local.
I love scoring that rare gem that rarely lights up.
I love scoring that rare novelty wave.
I love scoring that cheeky point swell when know one was looking.
I love finding the alternate when all the sheeple are heading to the same spot.
I love finding a clean 1ft peeler and I love when I turn up and its head high and pumping
I love the drive there and I the drive back.
I even fckn love it when I have gotten it wrong and its flat...

Because that is surfing... The ****e days make the great days even better...

And its why i'm excited about the wave pools... because they will take the "wave catchers" out of the lineups and leave them for the actual surfers... sure, I'm keen to try one but for me, surfing is a lifestyle and its more than just being on a wave... its SO much more than that

Good on you.

I surfed more twenty years ago when I had to drive hours to get to a beach than I have over the last four months.

Somewhere between 25-40 minutes depending on wind and swell is my normal drive.

I'm changing jobs later this year and expect to have more surf time - the wife said "Since you started three years ago, you surf less, so less with the kids and do your other interests less. What are you doing? There's more in life than money."

i onew there was a reason I married her.

...If you count flights to waves I'm very happy to spend up to about 24hrs getting to waves

Driving up to about 5 hours each way is not too much of a mission, but not keen for over 5hrs round trip for a day trip.

But these days I prefer to fly to waves coz extended stays are generally cheaper or have the new adventure bonus

I think now after my injuries and what not ,that I have now put the road trip back on weekly .

Have had so much fun with only a two hour drive max.

The whole thing I love. From the planning and constantly checking how conditions could be,to the drive which no longer seems boring anymore

Plus we have so many beautiful places to surf that one would be a fool not to do it

There certainly are some beautiful places 2 hrs North & South of you mate

I will shove live mud crabs up my arse with a burning stick whilst standing on broken glass if it means I will get waves.
I am willing to upset all family and friends and prior bookings if it's pumping .
I am a selfish selfish human and I don't care
