Anyone actually post in here anymore?

About a decade ago I bought one of macs new for old Mcts as my first board. Changed the direction of my life for ever. So thanks Mac.

Water time + Career..

Love to know what you do and whether or not your happy with the amount of water time you get. (Kids/family aside).. If your not happy, what do you wish you had done as a career instead?

Probably time for me to grow up unfortunately. I've worked predominantly part time hospitality work. Has allowed me to get in the water pretty much whenever I want. But thats about the only plus side.

Dropped half my salary, half my holidays and all my stress four years ago when I ended a 22 year career. Now spend a lot more time surfing. Lifes good.

Hey Boondie, mac here that's awesome to hear, which board was it? Do you have a image. I've seen met a heap of guys over the years who I guess have that lifestyle your talking about. I did the hard yards and focused on family. All is good I now surf as much as possible and still enjoying as ever. Good topic btw and yes sadly the forum has slowed but it would only take a few to post more often to kick it along

Indeed - it goes in spurts. A couple of fresh topics will get it running for a few days/weeks, then it drops off again.
But this is a great topic.
A few years ago, I knocked back a great new job opportunity 'cause it was going to cut into my surfing.
But the last couple of years, my workload has gotten out of hand anyway. Regularly cranking out 60 hr weeks, for 40 hrs pay.
Damn hard to get up for a pre-work surf when working until midnight, and when I'm working late on the 'extra' stuff, I'm not working 'dry', so that doesn't help. But I do get a lot of satisfaction out of the 'extra' work I do, and that's about the only reward.

And its a tough balance. I know I'll be able to retire pretty comfortably when I hit retirement age (Uni Super is ace!), but I'll then be in my early 60's.

"If your not happy, what do you wish you had done as a career instead?" - I'm thrilled with my career, I love so many aspects of it.
That said, I've taken on many 'leadership' roles, both internally and externally to the uni. I get paid nothing more, or very little, for these. It's these roles that take my time (Editorial roles on scientific journals, sitting on significant grant panels like the MRFF etc). I see many of my colleagues getting paid the same as me, doing half the work - literally. And all these extra roles wont take me further up the chain.. .and if they did, there's then greater expectations and workloads, and moving away from what it is that I love doing.
I'd like to have the mindset to be able to step away from the 'leadership' roles to have that little bit more time, that better work life balance. But sadly, when someone says 'we think you're the best person to do this', I find it hard to say no... particularly when I look at their other options.

But what about you, Boondie? Do you like/love what you do? If what you're doing is working for you, do you need 'to grow up'?
For sure, there's the whole 'retirement' thing. My job, I can work until my mind goes or I cark it, whichever comes first - I just don't want to work that long. At least not full-time. I can certainly see myself retiring to a part-time roll.
Not so sure about your industry - but also have no idea how old you are or what you actually do part-time in hospitality.

Anyway, back to reviewing an ungodly amount of MRFF grant applications......

Cheers!

And Macaha orders then sells so many McT's that I'm convinced 82% of McT's around the country were once owned by Macaha!

Long time ago thought going into working for myself was the answer - 30 years latter can tell you it definitely isn't .
old mate of mine always said do what you want to do - not what you have to do , works pretty well for me .

Mac it's one of your old Evos 9'6x23x3. I still actually have it sitting in the shed. I honestly don't think I could sell it now as it means to much..I'll grab some snaps for you. I'm sure you'll be stoked to see it's been well loved.

Yeah, it's definitely time for me to grow up. I turn 30 soon and I've got nothing to my name. Haha my couple of boards are probably worth more then my car.

I've just got no idea where to even start career wise. Something with a fairly decent work/life balance. I couldn't be a weekend warrior.

That would be awesome mate post some pictures and I'm 60 and still not grown up I think it's got a lot to do with surfing and the culture it keeps you young and that is a good thing. I mean what you going to do sit on the lounge all week nope stay young but most importantly find a job you enjoy and once you do let me know I'll charge career

Would that of had the 07 rocker Mac ??.

I surfed everyday I wanted pretty much from teens till I was mid 30s, my life revolved around it, Then responsibility found me..

Wouldnt change it though love my kids etc. Wish I had more time but Surfing is a hell of a selfish lifestyle in so many ways.

Hardly surfed the last few years. Mainly cause I bought a boat after awesone Surfing holiday to indo that made home seem like hard work for average surf. but the focus is back on it.

Keen again.

SP - of course it had the 07 rocker!
And I went the opposite way to you. Was a mad keen fisho. Had the boat (or kayak) out at least once a week. Plenty of post-work trips chasing snapper in the bay.
Just before I hit 40, wife and I were looking at going on a skiing holiday. Got to looking at lift passes and all that stuff, and randomly blurted out: hell, we could go to Hawaii for less than this, and why do we want to go somewhere colder in winter?
Was in Waikiki, and decided that I couldn't be in Hawaii without surfing. Took a lesson. Stood up first wave. Fishing has played second fiddle ever since.
Funnily, I have a quiver that exceeds my skill level - or more to the point, I have way too many boards for how poorly I surf... and I blame that on fishing. Got to have a specific rod/reel combo for everything. I must have 6+ combos just for snapper (different lures etc). And saying 6+ snapper combos is probably a significant understatement!

Boondie - if hospitality is your thing, and you've got a tonne of experience there at the 'lower' levels, why not consider chasing management type roles in the industry? post-covid, every uni is running online options, and part-time too. Could knock out a degree/diploma in hospitality? Coupled with your experience, could work out for you. Of course, if you don't like hospitality anymore, then chase something else. Main thing here is to work out what you want to do.

Haha, bet it was black, white and red too.

Fishing combos are cheaper than boards at least or that is what I'm telling myself at the moment.

I now have a collection of both that exceed my needs and abilities . The killer with fishing is lures, can't resist buying a few on every visit to any tackle shop.

Grew up fishing up with dad and pop and caught everything you could just about name from, bream to blackfish to mackerel to Barra to bass, trout etc when I was to young to know how good we had it. Then in my teens went down the usual piss, party and surf route and didn't fish much at all. Few times a year when dad said they were on I'd go out.

Wasn't really until my kid got to about 6 and got keen that I really got back into it. Feel a bit guilty that I dropped it for so long, great fun and way to bond with the old boy, and kid.

Certainly is hard to juggle both pastimes with 2 kids and work.

But plenty of jobs out that you can start late, get roster days and still have time to surf, fish and be responsible.

Life is more about balance when you get older and sacrifices inevitably get made but you still gotta fit the time in for yourself. I get a RDO every fortnight and the missus knows it's not job day it's fish, surf and have a nap on the lounge day
