Been watching a few youtube vids on fixing up your board. Everything from using the solarez to going pro and re-glassing an area. More of a reason I need a shed in my ample backyard!

Looks like a bit of fun and obviously cheaper than paying, not that its expensive if it only happens every now and then, just that it happens to me all the time

Anyone got any good stories about learning to fix there board? Got a feeling I will be a trial and error kind of repairer ha ha. Pics would be good as well.

I actually have some pics I will be posting later on from a trip away to an uncrowded break over the weekend (well relatively uncrowded anyway) Scored good sized waves and had a ball. Good old WA.

I've not really got any repair stories but I like to keep this in favorites just in case I do need to make a repair some time in the future.

I watched a mate try and repair a snapped nose on a shortie once, so funny he was freaking cos he did a hot mix (he didnt know he did this) and when the resin was going off and getting really hot and started to smoke up like a red bull air racer.

He ran around not really knowing what to do, yelling at his wife to get water/fire extingishers ect and generally panicking.

His wife just laffed at him and didnt really do much. When he settled down a bit and after the resin had dried enough I walked over to the repair and snapped the nose off again and started to do the job myself. Should have seen the look on his face when I did that!!

Thats what happens when you get a lawyer to do the job of a ding repairer

Although I've never done any board repairs, I've had a vast amount of experience in making car parts from glass and sometimes even using PU foam and sandwich construction similar to board construction.

Because of this experience, if there was one tip I could give anyone, (other than to suggest you should never mix any more than 2% catalyst, unlike doggies legal friend) it's never buy more catalyst that you need to do a job.

No problem with the resin, you can keep that for years and depending on what type it is, it will usually stay good, but catalyst goes off. So if you know it's been sitting on the shelf for over a year, get some fresh stuff, it's as cheap as chips.

And yes, it has happened to me, a dirty big disgusting mess of wetted out glass that refused to even gel let alone go off.

Sure I have told this story before but here it comes again.

Many years ago living in the burbs where men were men and women had 19 inch biceps Yes I grew up in a tuff hood and going to school was like going to fight club

My first board was a 6.? single, yellow with white deck.It cost ten bucks and in great nick, back then that was a bucket load of money so I asked my brothers girlfriends (now long time sister in-law) brother to check it out and he gave it the nod.He was a great surfer at the time.

I was 12 at the time and the holidays were always down Yamba, not the place for a beginner.Oh Yamba, first shag and I was not 12,first stitches and first fin chop.Anyway I buy the mix and as I do today never read the instructions.Living at home I decided my room was my work shop. I mixed too much hardener and within a minute the thing started smoking,I was sh-tting myself, there goes my board up in flames until good old mum comes running in with a bucket of water.I got my arse kicked for that one.
That's my story on board repairs, fast forward, I'm pretty good now and repair a zillion small jobs but I always take my LB's to a good repairer.
My son and his mates still ask me to fix a few small dings and I am happy to do it.

I will try and stop this thread descending to the depths by adding to the actual topic of the thread.

Seen a clip of a guy using just the solarez to fix a fairly substantial bit of damamge to the tail. Pretty much just layered it on in stages and filled it out. Is this the same strength as glassing/filling it? Have seen a couple of glassing kits in shops are they worth their salt to get into doing it properly or not worth it?

I guess there is only one way to find out, I have a ding I want to practice it on but need my favourite board in case the surf picks up so cant stuff it up

I've got a tube of solarez and used it on the McT about 3 weeks ago. If you do it right, don't rush like I do, it does a pretty good job.
It's only really for smallis holes not for large chunks.
My ding was only about an inch or so square and cut into the foam but it still did the job well.

Great stuff for lazy pr#cks like me.

well that definately could be on the cards doggie since mac likes to go left on right handers which means when he drops in on me i will be well and truly needing a new board ,seen the size of him.A carton of solarez won't help if that happens. There's a big possibility of a match up next Friday stay tuned.

back to the thread...I had a lawer friend who wanted to make his own board...he would come into my factory and buy just enough materials from me to do the next stage...while getting me to give him a small tutorial of the next stage...we come to the glassing and he goes of all pumped after I told him what to do....few days later he returns and tells me of his efforts....still the funiest surf board building story I have heard.....his wife tells him...no way your working with resin in the garage...he says its fine love I will put something over the floor.....he put news paper down...pages and pages of newspaper....things are going fine until the resin starts to fall on the paper....and then he starts steping on one page...it sticks to his foot...then another and another and so on in the end he has two or three heralds stuck to both feet shaking his leg like a cat with something stuck to its foot...he's cursing something fierce now and the wife comes down to see what all the comotion is all about, so now he has her screaming at him for the mess he is making.........then his brew starts to gell

Ha ha to be a fly on the wall in that garage would be classic! I think I would love to shape a board but would get it glassed by a pro. Im keen to learn the repairs though cos thats on a small scale.

Given my nature of trial and error I would leave the big jobs to the pros.

I dont mind the threads getting a little off beat now and then, keeps it interesting, you can always reply to the thread in a way that relates to the topic so no dramas. You would be surprised at how many other relevant questions get answered that are off topic on a thread.

Lawers should stick to what they know I recon.

What is the difference between a lawer and a trampoline?

Great story. Reminds me of way back when i was making a few boards.
It was my first ever board and time to glass it. I had my mate helping and we wern't to sure how much resin to use, so we mixed up about twice as much as needed. Working in bare feet the resin was going all over the garage floor and all over our feet.
When it came time to clean up we didn't have any acetone or solvents to use but we had heard that plain flour does a good job of getting resin off your skin when you rub it in. Being a single young bloke there was never any flour in the house,so my mate came up with the great idea that sugar would be just as good.........
I think it took about a week to get our toes unstuck and the ants off
