Just starting to get some gear together for an OS trip.

I looking at this Dakine World Traveler bag as it takes 4 boards as they are on Torpedo 7 for $209. The idea is I can fit my 8ft and a 7ft in it as well as my sons 6ft boards. For another trip if I go by myself, I'll pack it with just my 2 boards and all my clothes etc.

Is this thinking rationale? Are smaller boards ok in a larger bag? Or should I look at 2 bags, 1 8ft and one 6'6

Thanks

Mate buy two doubles, one for you and the other for your lad.A tight fitting board bag is the way to go imo.I've only had one board damaged by baggage handlers by that was my own fault by packing other items in with the board,my son takes a double for his shortboards with extra leggies.I've used a 10mm travel cover and the last few trips I have been using a 5 mm day type bag without any dramas.

Four boards in one bag I have found the following issues with, they are heavy to pack on the roof of the car and more so my son and I can go our separate ways while OS,he may want to surf another location than I do on any given day.

I agree with Mac - a big board bag is a pain in the neck to travel with. I used a 3 board coffin bag for my 10mth trip through South America - had 2 boards in it and all my gear and just had a small backpack. It was Perfect but at times it was too heavy and awkward. I had to do some rather large walks for transfers. I always had a day bag travel cover as well for ease and packed my wetties and towels around the tails. Never had a problem - just looked in the old dairy and I did 248 hours on buses and 8 plane rides and did not have any issues what so ever with damage.

The trick in this day and age though is to manage your bag weight to avoid extra charges. 2 boards and gear is approx. 20kg for me. Sometimes 22kg with wetsuits. Sometimes I stick my fins in my day bag to keep the weight out. Some of the heavy travel bags can weigh 7 or 8kg on their own - do not get one with wheels for this reason alone - although they can be good in an airport the rest of the time they are a pain in the neck. The wheels also full up with crap like mud and sand etc.

There was a bloke on this site from Victoria who was making these really light-weight covers - where you just put your two normal board bags in it and pull the straps tight - I think that they make a lot of sense - will see if I can find the link for them - cheap to - $80 from memory - the idea being that they save you weight and space, you already have board bags, you need a day bag when you get there, and keep them together as one package for ease of travelling and to satisfy airline requirements of one bag.
