I found my old pile of Tracks magazines the other day while i was clearing out some cupboard space and spent some time scanning the archival topics and awesome pics ,
I came upon an article from the 90,s debating the biggest waves between East and West coast namely far north NSW into S/E QLD and the south vic area over to WA , some awesome opinions from the crew of that era , I reminisced over some mega day,s with my mates , some still charging ,others now lost to the surf gods .
Today in Sydney its flat so i was wondering how BIG it has to get before the crew out there will back out either at your home break or anywhere else . I know from the posts that there are some well travelled chargers out there, so come on how BIG

I think everyone is waiting so they can out do each other

OK I'll start, shortboard day's northern NSW's on a dark stormy
sharky afternoon, me and two mates paddled out on this straight
beach which had a bank way out which was delivering a perfect
peak, you could go either left or right. It was around six foot at the
time and after an hour it grew to around eight. One friend bailed and
it was left to the two of us.
My mate catch the next set wave and I the next.he was paddling out
and I could see this HUGE set on lines coming in and started paddling for the horizon my mate copped it on the head and I was smashed by the white water
and never made it back out

Bali, Kuta reef on a longboard 6 foot mid tide awesome.

Hawaii 07, Backdoor on a longboard 5 foot. After having a big moment and blowing bubbles I struggle over 4 foot now day's, I have a real problem explaining this to my 17 year old son who is fearless and still asks why I dont go anymore.

mac must be getting old

My biggest are probably around an 8 ft bommy at Long Reef but they really shouldn't count because they're almost always so fat and easy to catch.

They can wall up a bit on the inside but by that time you're all set up and can just enjoy the ride without any worries.

They can get bigger but apart from fear, I have an excellent control mechanism for ensuring I don't go out when it's that big, I can't paddle out.

It's just woeful in Sydney today, yesterday was bad but at least it wasn't raining. Take a look at a surfcam.

I don't care how small it is I will always go out but these last 2 days are even below my lowest possible standard.

Same here, I pulled 2 big Lilly Pilly stumps yesterday.

At least it's a big of exercise and I get some use all out of my old off road recovery gear.

8' on the face is about me (little over head high), I just don't like taking the beating. I've been out when it's a bit bigger but I find I don't enjoy it as much.

We were surfing a break that shall not be named, took the tinny over milled around to check we're in a ok spot - drop the anchor I'm last in the boat and a large set (in the 8' range) came through which I went through in the tinny (not fun) started the engine (a couple times) pulled the anchor while a couple other sets came through and moved the boat. I had the shakes and couldn't catch a wave the entire morning.

I've been know to say nothing and start paddling out - while leaving the missus to cop a set on the head (not a good look - I don't recomend it)

I tend to like 5' and under (I've had perfect 2-3' 2x this week) I was hoping to get the boards and road bikes out of the city this weekend but the surf forcast has gone up to 6' which means only one of us will surf and that doesn't work well.

Nah its not fun...especially when the old mans heading for the horizon in a 50ft cray boat and your sitting 40 nauticals out to sea....can't believe you still have a missus if your letting her cop sets on the head
