Your mates balcony rocks...but you know what, I don't think the surf looks terribly crowded. Reckon I'd clean up on a LB on the middle right there. Everyones just baking on the beach. Way more out on the bank at triggs point on boxing day when I took a detour back home after chrissy seriously...

About 1 hour 45 minutes from home , 45 minutes from my beach shack . Normally windy as but was magic on Thursday . Lots of tourists around. That pic of Bondi is crazy
The crowd at my local was maybe 1/20 th of that and that was plenty
