Hi All

I'm planning to take myself and the kids (11 and 8) to Bali. I'd like to be somewhere close to the surf that's manageable for kids. i.e. over sand, and breaks around the 2 to 3 foot mark.

Any ideas?

Cheers

The big question is when are you thinking of going? What month approximately ?

South end of Kuta around here has smaller waves coz the beach is blocked by the Tuban reef, Kuta reef etc You can walk North for more size.

If you want to get out of Kuta this place has Berawa out front & old mans 5 mins walk North. Size depends on the day, but the waves are fat/easy. Although the waves break a little offshore on patches of reef, the beach is sand.

South Kuta would probably be best in my opinion. Kids often like to be able to touch the ground with their feet & the size of the wave is more controllable by simply walking North or South. Canngu areas would have more clusters of more experienced surfers & the wind is generally sideshore by mid day, while Kuta is still nice & offshore. There are also heaps more shops/massages/ restaurants in South Kuta. And waterbomb park, a must for the kids is pretty much just over the road from that Hotel. Could be booked out for those school holidays though (Bali Garden Hotel). You can click map & zoom in for more options in that area.

Thanks for the info MickPC and Tux. Your suggestions are on the money, however I was kind of hoping to get away from the maddening crowd a bit. I'm sure the kids would love the waterbomb park, but I'm hoping to avoid that kind of stuff!

I was thinking of a spot where there are longboard waves, and doesn't attract the attention of most surfers (something a bit more marginal). Happy to travel around a bit to discover other options. Maybe wishful thinking.

In that case Canngu, surf before brekky at old mans before the surf schools swarm the joint. Plenty of other breaks along that stretch depending on sandbanks, tide & swell.

Yeah you can still get uncrowded surf in the guu...I had a great session at a left hander between old mans and echo beach last time we were up there...there are plenty off different peaks and its usually only a couple fo minutes walk to find somewhere with less people
