Brought myself a balance board. Much as the vids are WAY kooky, except the cutey chica , I went for the Goofboard and would strongly recommend. The thing is super fun and it is absolutely helping to sharpen up my surfing, I surfed this sick lil river mouth today and really noticed I was much more poised and smooth... STOKED, YEW!!!

Meh,I mucked around on one and was not that impressed compared to a normal indo board....in saying that the indo boards are death trap in waiting I made a smaller safer version that I use with a skate.deck.....I will be having a few beers soon, might have to get it out
Can you tell me what you like about the goof board, and what you do on it?

sure sure, to me it feels more like riding a surfboard than the indo. the indo has more give width wise or side by side whereas the G is pretty narrow so you gotta keep it pretty centered. that and i'm working on using it to help train my cross stepping... it is freakin hard though and certainly takes some practice... and bruises

also, now having one, it would be very simple to make, we're gonna run a few off mine. Some ply, a jigsaw, some rubber stoppers and some deck grip and your rolling

Never a wiser word said. I love mine, but it is ideally used in a large area, and no alcohol.

I'd have to disagree, I'm pretty stable on it now so getting drunk newbies to "look I'll show you, it's easy, give it a go" makes for a lot of laughs for me

Heres a goof board I made out of some ply I had lying around. Use a round coppers log as the roller.

I was always keen to get one to try but then I thought How do they help with walking a board. I think it kinda teaching bad habits. I think it's good for body positioning and maybe setting up the first step but I was always told lb are 9ft cause that's 3 steps to the nose so I think it's kinda counterintuitive to be taking small steps in a little area.
And on a board, it is moving forward, your moving forward and that wave is moving where as on this it moves the other way

Great idea for general balance though.

Totally has helped me with balance, body shape and subtle unconscious adjustment which in turn is making my turning and trimming smoother. As for cross stepping, personally I prefer the wingnut/august/knost etc style of more small steps. Granted they can do either given which best suits the situation, personally, I'd be happy to do either for now . Anyways, my cross stepping is rubbish, shuffles mixed with cross step etc, its pretty ugly but my feeling is you need to keep practicing till its second nature, like your pop up. Currently I can't cross step the GB but I'm close and I'm hoping once I get it I'll be able to practice till is 2nd nature and it'll translate to the water...

^ yeah, wingnut is good that is why he can take small steps. IMO small steps come from knowing where your board is and adjusting it to trim that bit better. Every good lb and surfer for that matter knows how important it is to get the board moving

I was told the best way to learn to get moving forward is just take a **** load of waves and run up there as quick as you can. You just take off an angle turn slightly to set you rail and pic the line. Top third of the wave, nose slightly pointed shoreward.
As you come off the bottom wait till the board accelerates a bit then start moving forward. If you just go your brain isn't thinking about shuffling.

If you watch old vids look at were they trim from, that is where you want to get to first.
From there you can wait and get a bit of acceleration, keep going or go back and turn it and the board should keep moving. Speed is your friend

Good thing is if your practicing it means you're surfing. My lack of water time lately I'd be lucky to get to my feet.

But Any waves will do. even close outs are good cause you know that it will get the board moving. just take off and run up there and cheater 5 to the end.
You just want your line to be a bit lower on the wave.

I reckon when the board is going reasonably quick it is easier. Nose riding in pissweak waves is actually harder IMO

I agree here, I find it easiest to hang ten through really critical sections.

I will specifically paddle behind the peak and hang toes through the section, kinda like backdooring a tube. Works well.

Yeah, was reading Tom wegener article on this. Issue atm is my board is a surftech, as soon as your behind the wave, in any whitewater she flaps around like a bitch, it's awesome for speed and turning but this is its flaw. That's where the new, heavier log should help. I'm sure if I was good enough you could on mine but the new schtick should def help. I hope

^^^ on my comp mal which is FireWire like, I can stil hang ten on that but again only on steep sections or where I am pushing water, like a fat section then standing up on the beach.

But it is probably still easier on the log, steadier too. Just keep running out there and throw all ten over, you will soon figure when and when not to do itluck have the points been working?

Good to hear you getting up there TK.

Looking forward to next vid. As you said just keep doing it and you will get better.

Andy why are you behind the whitewater you want to be on the clear water.
Only Tudor can nose ride through the foam.

I'm so.for for just getting there...I got teased by some.crew about my shuffling. Was told the next wave no matter what it is,just cross step to the nose, and run. No little steps on the beachies. Was amazed when I made it. I probably overdo it a bit now
I say who cares, git the best, first hang ten right over the nose the other morning,it just would not stop, turned my head around and watched the board in the wave.....I was beyond happy

Like you andy my going back suffers. I was getting caught in the leash all the time. Then I would paddle with the ankle part near my cheat and pick it up as I popped. Was working unreal until I got smart and thought I would pop with it in my mouth to make it easier.....my teeth are tough.....hipsters save your applause

sounds like your progressing really well TK, i think being a light weight and being younger and less set in your ways deff helps... as opposed to be old and heavy like me.

SP, with the ST i do stay on the face, but sometimes, like with re-entry or taking that late take off you get in the ww and on the ST its balls, my old log you could kinda bulldoze through.

and totally chrispy, just getting there is step one, then focus on the finesse. i can get there with a 5 but not yet the ten and likewise with the legrope. i just brought this one that coils most of the lead so in theory less tangles but we'll see. been also contemplating a knee rope.

but i'm still convinced the GB is deff helping me improve

I once considered one of these because I was having so much trouble learning to surf again at my age and after being off a board for so long. I forgot how long ago it was that I looked at them so I searched my old emails and found it was back in July 2010.

They said the cost would be $285 and I decided that it would be a waste of money because it looked far too hard for someone as old as me so I just made myself a simple little balance board on a PVC pipe and that helped me a lot. I don't need to use it anymore because I just don't think it's all that helpful anymore, and using it is a bit boring.

I also found another email where they wrote back to me in June of 2011 and asked me what I would have been prepared to pay for one, because they were thinking of dropping the price to $210 au.

I told them I would probably only pay pay under $200, but I still think that they would be far too dangerous for someone like me.

Just out of interest, how much are they now?

Wow, they really were too expensive to start with, imagine dropping that much, I guess they were just trying it on to start with.
I'm glad they weren't that price a few years back, I may have bought one then an I'd be in a wheelchair now.
